About The Position

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) is seeking a Fire Safety Officer to ensure fire protection and the safety of Museum visitors, personnel, and art collections from fire hazards. This role involves making inspections of auxiliary protection equipment, conducting daily fire safety inspections of the building, and instructing personnel on the operation of fire extinguishers and alarm systems. The officer will also supervise all welding and burning operations.

Requirements

  • Must have full time fire fighting experience in a major municipal fire department.
  • Possess knowledge of the chemistry of fire and knowledge of the NYC fire codes, rules and regulations pertaining to combustibles and flammables.
  • Have experience in fire extinguishment.
  • Individual must qualify for Certificate of Fitness as a fire guard for public assembly and torch operations from the NYC Fire Department.

Nice To Haves

  • EMT-b or Paramedic experience preferred.
  • College degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts fire drills and fire instruction as directed by Security Management.
  • Secures compliance with NYC fire codes, procedures, and regulations pertaining to the storage and use of flammable or hazardous materials.
  • Acts as fire guard during welding and cutting operations and checks for hidden sparks after operations are finished.
  • Responds to all emergency calls in the Museum.
  • Provide appropriate first aid treatment, in a medical emergency, before arrival of emergency medical technicians. This may include performing CPR or administrating the use of AED.
  • Advises Security Management on all matters related to fire safety.
  • Liaison with NYC Fire Department and escort NYC Fire Inspectors.
  • Identify potential safety or fire hazards; take action or make recommendations to eliminate hazards.
  • Assist the Fire Safety Manager develop plans for easy evacuation of people in the Museum in case of a fire outbreak, structural collapse, or any other emergency requiring an evacuation.
  • Oversee and facilitate fire drills, building inspections, and fire safety instruction as directed by Security and Buildings Management.
  • Ensure compliance with the NYC fire codes, procedures and regulations pertaining to the storage and use of flammable and/or hazardous materials is enforced.
  • Supervise and ensure permits are valid to conduct “hot work” using oxygen and a flammable gas, such as acetylene or propane.
  • Serve as lead contact with NYC Fire Department staff and NYC Fire Inspectors.
  • Maintain all fire safety equipment in the building, such as fire extinguishers and other fire-suppression equipment; and assist the Buildings and Security Departments with the life-cycle replacement requirements for non-functioning, old equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
