About The Position

The department of Facilities Management and Planning effectively serves the needs of the Mississauga Campus community for the development, space allocation, renovation, operation and maintenance of all infrastructure, facilities and related services. As the Fire Prevention Officer, you will ensure the compliance of our fire prevention and protection program advising on requirements for new construction and renovation projects and continually reviewing current fire and life safety systems and procedures recommending preventative or alternative life safety measures and corrective action, evaluating risk factors and inspecting buildings to determine fire prevention requirements.

Requirements

  • Advanced College Diploma (3 years) in fire technology or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years related experience in all areas of fire safety coupled with a demonstrated knowledge of relevant fire safety legislation, codes, standards, and procedures.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Building and Fire Codes and their applications is required.
  • Experience in reviewing drawings and specifications for new construction and renovations is required.
  • A detailed understanding of fire alarm system terminology and operations is required.
  • Ability to operate a variety of extinguishers, fire alarm systems, special detection devices, and sprinkler and standpipe systems is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook etc...) specifically with spreadsheets, internet research, word processing, and email is required.
  • A valid Ontario driver's licence is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a customer service orientation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines.

  • Working knowledge of CAD software.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting routine building inspections for fire and life safety issues
  • Assessing and recommending corrective action to resolve code violations
  • Implementing complex and technical emergency fire safety plans
  • Identifying and implementing corrective actions to restore fire safety systems to full service
  • Implementing temporary protective alternatives to provide for fire safety during planned and unplanned system isolations and shutdowns
  • Analyzing and recommending corrective actions and procedural changes following fire occurrences
  • Inspecting the construction and installation of fire and life safety equipment and systems
  • Advising project managers and contractors on fire prevention requirements in relation to changes to construction specification for new building and renovation projects
