About The Position

The City of Greer is currently accepting applications for a Fire Marshal in our Fire Department. This role involves supervising, directing, and evaluating assigned staff, serving as the Fire Marshal for the department, and directing the activities of the department. The position requires planning, coordinating, administering, and evaluating programs, projects, processes, procedures, systems, standards, and/or service offerings, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, and/or standards. Responsibilities include conducting occupancy inspections, fire investigations for cause and origin determination, overseeing the plan review process, conducting life safety inspections, and coordinating pre-fire plans. The Fire Marshal also assists in coordinating department activities with other City departments and organizations, and coordinates code changes.

Requirements

  • Requires bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Business, Management, Public Administration, or related field, and eight (8) years of experience in fire suppression, fire prevention, and education, including five (5) years of fire service supervisory experience, or 10 years of experience in fire suppression, fire prevention, and education, including 7 years of fire service supervisory experience, or any combination of education and experience.
  • Requires the following certifications: NFPA/IFSAC Firefighter II, NIMS ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, Fire Officer III, ICC – Inspector II, ICC – Plan Review, ICC – Certified Fire Marshal, Fire and Life Safety Educator Level I, Car Safety Seat Technician.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Fire Science, Business, Management, Public Administration, or related field, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Serves as the Fire Marshal for the department.
  • Coordinates, assigns, and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Directs the activities of the department, which includes planning, coordinating, administering, and evaluating programs, projects, processes, procedures, systems, standards, and/or service offerings; ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, and/or standards.
  • Receives, reviews, prepares, and/or submits a variety of reports and documents including monthly statistical reports, memorandums, evaluation forms, incident reports, timesheets, training reports, vehicle maintenance reports, hydrant information, and general office correspondence.
  • Conducts and coordinates occupancy inspections for overcrowding.
  • Conducts Certificate of Occupancy Inspections.
  • Conducts fire investigations for cause and origin determination, photographs the scenes using various equipment (camera and matter port), and coordinates with law enforcement when needed.
  • Oversees the plan review process for the department.
  • Coordinates and conducts life safety inspections for self and staff.
  • Coordinates pre-fire plans for the department and ensures they are in-line with ISO requirements.
  • Assists in coordinating department activities with other City departments and other local, state, and federal organizations as necessary or appropriate.
  • Coordinates code changes to department when changed.
  • Performs related work as required.
