The position of Fire Marshal is responsible for overseeing inspections, plan reviews, and enforcement of applicable life-safety and fire codes. This role involves investigating complaints, interpreting fire codes, issuing permits, and representing the department in meetings. The Fire Marshal also meets with various stakeholders, inspects buildings for code compliance, calculates and issues Occupant Load Certificates, and conducts after-hours monitoring of assembly occupancies. The role requires creating reports, assisting with budget items, issuing and monitoring permits for fireworks displays, and witnessing final tests of fire safety systems. Additionally, the Fire Marshal reviews plans for code compliance (except for high-hazard and high-rise structures), conducts code research, monitors fire drills, provides public fire safety education, reviews inspection reports from contractors, issues and reviews burn permits, approves fire department access to properties, identifies fire lanes, and reviews site plans for access, fire lanes, and fire hydrant placement. The position ensures that all required IFC Chapter 5 Fire Service Features are submitted to the DeKalb County Fire Department for review and performs other related duties as required or assigned.
