About The Position

This is technical work in reviewing and evaluating construction plans, fire protection systems, and building designs to ensure compliance with applicable fire protection systems, codes and regulations. This includes fire suppression, detection and alarm systems, and standpipe and smoke control systems. Responsibilities also include continuous contact with citizens, vendors, as well as other employees throughout the organization. This position will function with the Fire Department and the Building & Inspection Division under general supervision of the Fire-Rescue Chief and the Fire Marshal.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Fire Science or related field; plus two (2) years experience with performing building inspections and plan review of building construction and fire suppression systems.
  • Must possess a Florida Municipal Fire Inspector I Certificate.
  • Knowledge in NFPA 1 Uniform Fire Code, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 13 Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm Code, and NFPA 96 Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations.
  • Knowledge of civil site engineering design and construction methods or fire protection, engineering, architecture or building construction activities.
  • Knowledge of fire, life safety and/or building codes.
  • Knowledge of civil and structural engineering.
  • Ability to read plans (commercial and multi-family residential).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, specifications and contract documents or regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret zoning regulations.
  • Skill in blueprint reading.
  • Skill in technical writing.
  • Knowledge of computer operations.
  • Skill in customer relations.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize routine, specialized and complex assignments and problems utilizing knowledge acquired through prior education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to adapt to an evolving and continually improving environment.
  • Requires demonstrated ability to utilize personal computer and office software such as MS Word, MS Excel and electronic mail.

Responsibilities

  • Review and comment on life safety and fire protection systems for compliance with fire and life safety codes, regulations and standards.
  • Analyze systems for high-piled storage, spray booths, hood and duct, dust collection, conveyors, hazardous materials or engineered systems.
  • Serve as a technical advisor to architects, engineers, developers, contractors and building owners in interpreting and enforcing fire protection requirements, fire and life safety codes, regulations and standards.
  • Investigate and prepare recommendations for the Fire Chief, the Fire Marshal, and the Chief Building Official on requests for alternate materials and methods.
  • Coordinate with Building and Safety Personnel in establishing schedules and methods for providing fire protection plan review services.
  • Identify resource needs and effectively communicate resource status with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly.
  • Disseminate information regarding new technological developments impacting the fire-rescue department activities and procedures.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence pertaining to fire protection engineering problems and fire and life safety code enforcement.
  • Train Fire Department personnel in all aspects of fire protection and inspection.
  • Evaluate alternate suppression systems such as CO2 systems, dry systems and water based fire suppression systems.
  • Attend meetings with staff, engineers, architects, and contractors, for technical assistance and resolutions to various problems.
  • Maintain proficiency with code changes and ordinances.
  • Prepare comments identifying code deficiencies.
  • Operate (accesses) computer.
  • Utilize computer for review comment input and permit status.
  • Provide technical information to the general public for questions relating to fire code requirements.
  • May perform site inspections to confirm construction compliance with approved plans.
  • Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
