About The Position

Under direction of a supervisor or fire officer, the firefighter responds to multiple incidents in an ever-changing environment. Performs basic preventative maintenance on apparatus, equipment, facilities, and other city items. Takes part in prevention and public education activities as assigned by the Operations and Prevention Divisions. May serve in a leadership capacity in the absence of the fire officer. The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Performs assigned services and activities within the Fire Department including all fire suppression, fire prevention, code enforcement, emergency medical services, and related functions and activities. Abides by fire department goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and priorities for assigned programs; recommend and administer policies and procedures. Ensures that equipment, safety clothing, apparatus, and supplies are specified, purchased, received, inspected, and distributed in an effective manner and consistent with City policy. Works under the City’s Emergency Management Plan to perform incident response and mitigation under direction of the supervisory personnel. Develop and maintain lines of communication and cooperation within the fire department with supervisors and peers. Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents; utilize the incident command system to direct activities and communications in fire and/or emergency situations; act to mitigate hazards and treat patients; make decisions affecting life and property under emergency circumstances; follow tactics and strategies as determined by the immediate supervisor. Attend and participate in professional group meetings; maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the field of fire science and emergency medical services; incorporate new developments as appropriate. Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints. Ensures all equipment and apparatus are properly inspected and maintained on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual schedule per Melissa Fire Department Standard Operating Procedures and other regulatory agencies which may govern firefighting, emergency medical, or special operating response. Works a rotating schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

High School diploma or GED
Minimum of Texas Commission on Fire Protection - Basic Firefighter (Intermediate preferred)
Minimum of Texas Department State Health Services - EMT Paramedic
Texas Commission on Fire Protection – Driver/Operator (preferred), must have within 6 months of hire date)
Minimum of NIMS 100, 200, 700, 701, 702, 703, 704, and 800 proofs of training (within 6 months of hire date).
Class B Exempt Driver's License.
Knowledge of operational characteristics, services, and activities of an emergency service program including fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services, disaster preparedness, hazardous materials response, and associated programs, services, and operations.
Knowledge of fire science theory, principles, and practices and their application to a wide variety of emergency service operations including fire suppression, fire prevention, fire investigation, emergency medical treatment and response, emergency medical protocols, apparatus preventative maintenance, facilities maintenance, public education, hazardous materials response, special operations, and other areas of response or assigned duties.
Knowledge of department emergency medical protocols and their applications.
Knowledge of principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
Knowledge of pertinent federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Knowledge of problem solving techniques and methodology.
Knowledge of Melissa Fire Department approved protocols.
Knowledge of Melissa Fire Department Standard Operating Procedures.
Knowledge of methods and techniques of public relations
Knowledge of methods and techniques of emergency medical response.
Knowledge of operational characteristics of fire apparatus and equipment.
Knowledge of principles of business letter writing and report preparation.
Knowledge of public safety computer systems.
Ability to participate in the management of comprehensive fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services, disaster preparedness, hazardous materials response, and associated programs, services, and operations.
Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.
Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations.
Ability to retain presence of mind and act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Ability to operate and effectively use specialized fire tools and equipment including safety equipment and vehicles.
Ability to operate modern office equipment and computers including applicable software applications; learn to effectively use a variety of departmental computer and computer related equipment.
Ability to maintain contact and preserve good relations with the public; respond to inquiries from the public.
Ability to work effectively with a variety of community groups.
Ability to effectively present and communicate information/directions in one-on-one and small group situations to the public and other employees of the organization.
Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively preform the assigned duties.
Ability to work irregular and on-call hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work.
Ability to maintain in good standing with the fire department’s medical control
Ability to maintain in good standing with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Ability to work and apply within the incident command system and all industry safety standards
Ability to apply fire science theory, principles and practices and their application to a wide variety of emergency service operations including fire suppression, fire prevention, fire investigation, emergency medical treatment and response, emergency medical protocols, apparatus preventative maintenance, facilities maintenance, public education, hazardous materials response, special rescue operations, and any other areas of response or assigned duties.
Ability to apply Melissa Fire Department Standard Operating Procedures to fire department operations.
Ability to apply Melissa Fire Department approved emergency medical protocols to emergency medical incidents.
Ability to maintain compliance with all state and national regulatory organizations to perform the functions of this job and any other duties which are assigned.
