About The Position

The County of Ventura Fire Department is an all-hazard, full-service agency committed to excellence and responding to the dynamic public safety needs of its diverse community. This department provides fire protection, medical aid, rescue, hazardous materials response, and other services. The Fire Control Worker position involves semi-skilled labor supporting fire prevention and suppression, including cutting and removing brush, performing maintenance on fire department equipment and facilities, operating specialized equipment, and responding to emergency calls. This role may involve working in hazardous conditions and performing physically demanding tasks.

Requirements

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age at time of application.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
  • Ability to obtain a Firefighter Endorsement in lieu a Class B within the first six (6) months of employment.
  • Ability to work for extended periods in hazardous environments while performing highly physical tasks, including heavy lifting (over 50 lbs.) and operating power tools.
  • Ability to work in challenging field conditions such as steep terrain, dirty environments, and extreme heat.
  • Skills, knowledge, and abilities to operate hand and power tools safely.
  • Ability to perform maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to work under hazardous conditions for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to perform extremely difficult physical tasks.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships.
  • Ability to function as part of a team.

Nice To Haves

  • One season or more of wildland fire suppression experience, either paid or volunteer with a fire agency.
  • Construction, or vehicle or building maintenance work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Cut and remove brush from roadsides, fire roads, and fuel breaks using hand and power tools.
  • Perform routine maintenance and janitorial duties at Fire facilities.
  • Perform manual tasks involved in fire control.
  • Respond to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property.
  • Operate vehicles and specialized equipment and work as a Fire Equipment Operator's aide for fire department bulldozers.
  • Perform flood control activities such as trenching, sandbagging, and debris removal.
  • Give functional supervision to laborers assigned to the Fire Department by the courts or other untrained individuals.
  • Perform maintenance work on fire department equipment and minor vehicle service and repair.
  • Participate in a departmental physical fitness program.
  • Perform maintenance work on fire department facilities such as landscaping, carpentry, masonry, paving, plumbing, fabrication, demolition, painting and paint preparation.
