About The Position

The Captain serves as a line officer responsible for directing fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS), rescue operations, and other emergency responses. The Captain acts as a shift supervisor overseeing personnel, ensuring operational readiness of equipment and apparatus, enforcing departmental policies, and supporting the Fire Chief in administrative and operational functions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (associate or bachelor’s degree preferred in Fire Science, EMS, or Public Administration).
  • Illinois EMT-B or Paramedic license, and ability to test into Loyola EMS system
  • Illinois Firefighter II or BOF certification.
  • Minimum 5 fire service experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience (Lieutenant or Acting Officer preferred).
  • Current/Valid Illinois Driver’s License of proper classification.
  • Successful completion of a professional and criminal background check.
  • Successfully pass pre-employment testing including a Fit for Duty Physical, Drug Screening, Agility and Lifting Evaluation.

Nice To Haves

  • Fire Officer I or II (preferred)
  • Illinois Fire Instructor I Certification
  • Incident Command System training (ICS 100/200/300).
  • Hazardous Materials Operations or Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Command emergency incidents when first-arriving officer until relieved by a higher-ranking officer.
  • Direct fire suppression, EMS, rescue, and hazardous materials response activities.
  • Ensure compliance with Incident Command System (ICS) protocols.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement and mutual aid partners.
  • Supervise firefighters, paramedics assigned to the shift.
  • Conduct daily briefings, assign duties, and ensure staffing readiness.
  • Mentor and evaluate personnel performance.
  • Address discipline issues in accordance with department and/or PSI policies
  • Coordinate and lead training drills and continuing education.
  • Ensure personnel maintain professional certifications.
  • Support implementation of new protocols, equipment training, and safety procedures.
  • Prepare incident reports and review documentation for accuracy.
  • Assist the Coordinator with scheduling, staffing coverage, and operational planning.
  • Support fire prevention initiatives, inspections, and public education programs.
  • Represent the department at community meetings or events when assigned.
  • Promote community risk reduction initiatives.
  • Enforce OSHA, NFPA, departmental & PSI safety standards.
  • Conduct post-incident critiques and safety reviews.
  • Ensure apparatus, equipment, and facilities are maintained and operational.
