About The Position

We are hiring Fire Captains/EMTs with a passion for service with the drive to succeed and deliver high-quality service. This position is contingent upon contract award. Employment is conditional on Rural Metro Fire / Capstone being awarded the referenced contract and is subject to successful completion of all pre-employment requirements, including background check, drug screening, and any client- or contract-specific clearances. Start date will be determined following contract award and may be adjusted based on the contract's period of performance. Candidates selected through this posting will be notified of their status once the award decision is finalized. Job Summary: The Fire Captain directs the activities of all fire personnel during an assigned shift. Responds to emergencies and performs fire suppression/EMS activities, rescue, damage control and property preservation. Maintains a state of readiness of facilities and equipment by scheduled inspections, testing and maintenance. Promotes the health and safety of the department. Performs fire prevention activities to include inspections, community presentations, fire hydrant inspections and maintenance, other duties as assigned. Although firefighting and rescue work are the most difficult and responsible areas of activity, the major portion of time is spent drilling and studying methods, techniques, and organization, and in routine duties in the care and maintenance of customer property and equipment.

Requirements

  • 21 years old
  • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate and must successfully pass the background investigation, pre-employment drug screening and pre-employment physical for firefighters
  • At least 5 years fire service experience (previous company officer experience highly desirable)
  • Valid State or National EMT certification (highly desirable)
  • Valid State of Texas driver’s license with clean driving record. Class B (highly desirable) will be required within 6 months of employment
  • Valid State, IFSAC, ProBoard or equivalent Fire Apparatus Driver Operator NFPA 1002 (highly desirable)
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter 1- State, IFSAC, ProBoard or equivalent
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter 2- State, IFSAC, ProBoard or equivalent (highly desirable)
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer 1- State, IFSAC, ProBoard or equivalent (highly desirable)
  • NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations- State, ProBoard, IFSAC or equivalent
  • NFPA Fire Instructor 1 State, ProBoard, IFSAC or equivalent (highly desirable)
  • NFPA 1006 Confined Space Rescue Technician (highly desirable)
  • NFPA 1005 Rope Rescue Technician (highly desirable)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, train and evaluate subordinates
  • Provide corrective action when appropriate
  • Supervise and assume command of emergency incident scenes
  • Respond to fire alarms and other emergency calls may drive assigned automotive equipment or fire apparatus to the required location.
  • May drive, operate and maintain various types of firefighting and suppression apparatus and equipment, including but not limited to pumping and ladder equipment and ground monitors.
  • Train personnel in the operation and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Quickly follow established Company procedures when responding to emergencies as well as instructions given at the emergency scene.
  • Correctly and promptly use all relevant apparatus, tools, and equipment.
  • Remain calm and poised in all emergency situations and gain rapid control over the problem at hand.
  • Administer emergency care to injured parties based on appropriate level of training.
  • Quickly analyze situations where life safety is threatened and apply the correct treatment.
  • Safely operate Company vehicles, and equipment as directed.
  • Assist in the maintenance of fire and rescue apparatus, tools, and equipment keeping such apparatus, tools, and equipment in good operating and safe condition by competently and efficiently performing maintenance and testing tasks.
  • Keep the company base and related grounds, facilities, and supplies in a clean, orderly and usable condition.
  • Perform routine non-firefighting work tasks, such as working on Company records, timecards and other related paperwork.
  • Function satisfactorily as a team member of a fire company at any emergency or non-emergency scene and willingly accept their share of the work required.
  • Able to meet the physical requirements required to perform firefighting tasks.
  • Remains skilled in and properly apply modern fire suppression tactics, methods, and procedures at training drills and emergency Incidents.
  • Project a positive attitude and image to the client as a fire service professional to meet the client’s needs.
  • Work effectively in following policies and procedures.
  • Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others when required.
  • Enter data or information into a terminal, PC or other keyboard device such as the Computer Aided Dispatch system.
  • Train and instruct employees in modern firefighting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Work cooperatively with other employees and the public.
  • Work in confined spaces such as attic crawl spaces.
  • Travel across wet, slippery, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.
  • Work at heights greater than ten feet.
  • Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet).
  • Observe or monitor people's behavior to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards, or to assess patient condition.
  • Communicate orally with customers, clients or the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
  • Perceive red, yellow, and blue colors to recognize hazards identified by fire diamonds.
  • Tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing job duties.
  • Work for long periods of time, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.
  • Rely on sense of sight, hearing, touch, and smell to help determine the nature of and emergency and make operational decisions.
