About The Position

The purpose of this class within the organization is to manage, direct, and coordinate the activities of a fire suppression shift. This class works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports. The Battalion Chief manages and coordinates emergency operations on emergency scenes to mitigate the loss of life and property. They are directly involved in scenes by executing command decisions to ensure successful incident completion. These personnel are included in initial dispatches and are required to respond with assigned units, providing leadership presence and operational coordination from the onset of an incident. They may also serve as part of the Rapid Intervention Team in accordance with department standards or receive orders from higher-ranking officers to perform direct operational tasks.

Requirements

  • Five (5) continuous years of current employment as a Fire Captain in the Petersburg Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services.
  • No disciplinary action within 12 months of the application closing date (written reprimand, suspension, or demotion).
  • A valid Commonwealth of VA driver's license consistent with the City's Administrative Regulation-Employee Driving Record.
  • Must have a current certificate as an Emergency Medical Technician (or Cardiac Technician or Paramedic) and Firefighter II certificate issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must meet and maintain department requirements for the position and to advance within the department career development plan.

Nice To Haves

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with fire service or a related field course of study and a minimum of three (3) years' experience as a Fire Captain in the Petersburg Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and coordinate emergency operations on all emergency scenes to mitigate the loss of life and property.
  • Manages shift staffing to include daily schedule Officers and Firefighters that encompasses vacation, personal development leave, administrative leave, sick leave, and trade time.
  • Develops and drafts operational policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Develops and coordinates training activities for the shift.
  • Serves as first level supervisor for personnel issues involving disciplinary actions, employee counseling, conflict resolution, and personal development.
  • Serves as the Emergency Services Coordinator for fire Control, Tactical Rescue, Mass Casualty, Hazardous Materials Incident Mitigation, and incidents involving natural disasters or acts of terrorism.
  • Directs the training activities within fire district in all phases of firefighting, rescue and resuscitation.
  • Serves as a point of contact for citizens' complaints or concerns.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
