The Fire Battalion Chief position is a department promotional opportunity open only to eligible Kern County Fire Department employees who have permanent status in the classified service and received an overall rating of standard or better on their most recent employee performance report. Selection is based on a written examination weighted at 100%. Candidates must attain a score of at least 70% on each phase of the examination process. Examination components will be administered at the scheduled dates, times, and locations without exception. Qualified candidates will be notified at least five days before the written examination. The examination assesses knowledge of fire prevention and suppression principles and practices; firefighting equipment and apparatus use and maintenance; departmental rules and regulations; county geography, fire hazards, and firefighting resources, including personnel, equipment, water supply, and communications; and first aid. This examination establishes an eligible list for appointments. Successful candidates generally remain on the eligible list for twelve months unless the Civil Service Commission specifies otherwise. Other permanent and temporary appointments may be made as needed. Kern County describes a culture that encourages employee growth and development, innovation, training, and continued professional development. A background check may be conducted. Following an offer of employment, candidates may be required to complete post-offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense. Candidates must present valid government-issued photo identification to be admitted to the examination or make prior arrangements with the Human Resources Division.
