About The Position

The Firefighter Academy is a 22.5-credit, one-quarter recruit academy delivered in a cohort model, covering fire behavior, building construction, hose and ladder operations, ventilation, rescue and extrication, hazardous materials and fire prevention. Training spans classroom, drill ground and live fire evolutions. The curriculum meets NFPA 1001 and qualifies successful candidates to sit for Washington State Firefighter I, Firefighter II and Hazardous Materials Operations written and practical exams, within EvCC's IFSAC-accredited fire science program.

Requirements

  • Professional Firefighter
  • Minimum 1 year of firefighting experience
  • Understanding of firefighting practices and equipment
  • Knowledge of IFSTA training materials
  • Ability to professionally communicate with students in a drill environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service oriented
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies
  • Be able to teach and facilitate prehospital skills
  • Knowledge of competency-based education principles and methods
  • Ability to assess student performance and progress and to provide appropriate feedback
  • Ability to promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among educational participants
  • Ability to maintain complete, accurate educational records
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer.

Responsibilities

  • Foster an equitable, anti-racist, and culturally inclusive learning environment and demonstrate an awareness of the experiences and needs of the current student population.
  • Develop curriculum, prepare, modify and deliver teaching/learning activities designed to maximize student learning and foster inclusive excellence.
  • Teach courses in accordance with the course record, course syllabus, approved student learning objectives, and quarterly course schedules.
  • Design and/or deliver course assignments, learning activities and assessments that enable students to meet the course’s stated learning outcomes.
  • Develop a current course syllabus using the College’s inclusive syllabus template and submit it to the Instruction Office prior to the start of the quarter.
  • At the course level, assess student work using appropriate methodologies that promote further learning; at the department or program level, disaggregate, review and assess student learning outcomes with the goal of continuous improvement and reduction of opportunity gaps.
  • Complete summative evaluations of student work during the College’s scheduled finals week; submit final grades by the designated deadline.
  • Create and maintain department and student records in accordance with college policies and procedures.
  • Refer students to college services, community agencies and other professionals as appropriate.
  • Establish, post, and maintain regularly scheduled office hours for consultation with students.
  • Complete annual trainings as required by state and federal law.
  • Read and respond to College communications (phone, email, etc.) in a timely manner.
  • Stay current in relevant best practices, emerging topics, and research.
  • Maintain certification and/or licensure required by the College in the performance of the faculty member’s assignment.
