The Finishing Operator works in Collins Aerospace Carbon Operations in Spokane, Washington, producing carbon brakes for commercial and military aircraft. This entry-level position involves learning to set up, calibrate, and operate automated chemical application equipment that applies protective chemicals to carbon aircraft brakes. The operator also completes manual chemical application processes and uses automated riveting equipment to fasten hardware to brake components. On-the-job training and a defined progression roadmap are provided. The Finishing Department applies protective coatings to prevent oxidation, manages material flow through ovens for chemical curing, and fastens hardware during final assembly. Most coating processes use Fanuc robots, and employees receive company-provided training to operate this equipment. The work includes repetitive handling of materials weighing less than 25 pounds for machine loading and unloading, inspections, weighing, and stacking. Much of the work is automated, so confidence troubleshooting digital and mechanical equipment issues is important. The position is onsite and follows a rotating 4-on/4-off schedule, with day and night shifts rotating every six weeks. Shifts are 12 hours, either 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. The role includes built-in guaranteed overtime, with non-overtime weeks offering additional time off. The hourly rate is $20.50.
