About The Position

This is the entry level position in the Finishing Department. Positions in this class will perform a variety of entry level physical tasks and have their work supervised. Machinist Class 1 employees will have tasks explained before they start to ensure full understanding of all work instructions. The work performed is observed and proficiency is reviewed every 90-180-270-360 days. As the employee progresses in skill the difficulty and variety of work will increase. During the evaluation benchmarks the employee will have a skill competency test as well as a formal review. If the employee successfully and consistently passes and proves independence as a Class One, they will have the opportunity to move to a Class Two position. Machinist Class 1 has no supervision of others.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • If no experience upon hire, successful completion of the General Carbide Career Academy, if designated by Managers.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints with a basic understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T); if there is no understanding of blueprints and/or then must be trainable within a reasonable amount of time.

Responsibilities

  • Performs entry level finish grinding functions.
  • Checks work using measuring and gauging devices, maintaining tolerances specified.
  • Efficiently operates equipment in the assigned department.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints with a basic understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T); if there is no understanding of blueprints and/or then must be trainable within a reasonable amount of time.
  • Accurately enters information related to the finishing department into the ERP system.
  • Performs routine maintenance and keeps equipment and work area clean and orderly in accordance with the 5-S standards.
  • Responsible for tools and fixtures used in work area.
  • Performs ancillary duties related to the department.
  • Observes health and safety regulations.
  • Adhere to all safety/environmental requirements and assist in promoting a culture of safety.
  • Follow all established procedures.
  • Contribute to meeting department quality-related goals to include delivery and other common organizational goals.
  • Ensure all measurement equipment being used is properly calibrated, in good working condition and properly documented per established procedures.
  • Ensure all records are filled out completely and legibly per established procedures.
  • Work with supervisor to Identify and contribute to updating written procedures when change to a current process is made.
  • When conflicting information is found, notify supervisor immediately for clarification before executing the next operational step.
