About The Position

The Department of Park & Recreation (DPR) Community Arts Unit is seeking multiple Fine Art Instructors for temporary year-round employment to instruct and support classes. These Instructors will work with a variety of media/disciplines for all ages and abilities to include offerings in ceramics, fine art, jewelry/metalsmithing, woodworking, sewing, crafts, painting, and drawing.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/Equivalent
  • 1200 hours of experience in woodworking, jewelry making, sewing, ceramics, painting and drawing, or fine art, including any work, volunteer, or formal art participation
  • 50 hours as an instructor in fine arts
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact daily with the public, including a high degree of collaboration with other staff
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to work independently and within a team environment
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities
  • Computer skills using MS Word and Excel

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in one or more of the following; Teaching art, including woodworking, jewelry, sewing, ceramics, painting and drawing
  • Working with individuals with disabilities
  • Teaching youth/teens pottery, jewelry making, or woodworking
  • Ample experience in one or more of the following disciplines with related skills: Jewelry: Soldering, metal forming, stone setting, enameling, casting, and use of torches, flexshafts, and hand tools.
  • Ample experience in one or more of the following disciplines with related skills: Ceramics: Wheel throwing, hand building, glazing, kiln loading, glaze mixing, and studio maintenance.
  • Ample experience in one or more of the following disciplines with related skills: Woodworking: Operation of woodworking machinery (table saws, lathes, drill presses, jointers, planers, etc.) and hand tools.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching one or more classes in any of the following: Woodworking, Jewelry (metalsmithing), Sewing, Painting, Drawing, and Ceramics with skills in wheel throwing, hand building, surface decoration and glaze application fundamentals
  • Teaching fundamental art techniques and safety to individuals of varying skill levels from beginner to intermediate level and teens and adults
  • Developing curriculums and lesson plans, including tracking enrollment and attendance
  • Emailing students reminders of class status, emergency closures or cancellations, etc
  • Communicating with class manager regarding supplies, class scheduling and miscellaneous events
  • Performing administrative duties, completing required trainings, collecting participants program evaluations, and submitting timesheets
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned
