About The Position

The Finance Controller (Senior Manager) is a key member of Vertex’s Chief Operating & Financial Officer (COFO) organization, reporting to the Finance Controller (Director). The role serves as a strategic partner and subject matter expert for functional Finance teams including Research, Development, Biopharmaceutical Sciences & Manufacturing Operations, Commercial, G&A and Corporate Finance. The Senior Manager designs, implements, and leads continuous improvement of processes, policies, and procedures to advance an agile, strategic and compliant Finance organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting required
  • Demonstrated experience with forecasting, P&L ownership, and SOX controls required.
  • 8+ years of progressive finance and industry experience
  • Strong business acumen, judgment, and knowledge of the company’s markets/products and industry trends.
  • Exceptional communication skills, written and verbal; demonstrated ability to present across audiences.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to translate business objectives into financial frameworks, policies, and operational plans.
  • Specialized knowledge of US GAAP, SOX requirements, and financial planning & analysis best practices
  • Expertise with Excel, PowerPoint, and financial systems
  • Proven ability to lead through influence and build trusted relationships across the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA preferred
  • Big 4 or equivalent Public Accounting experience preferred.
  • Biotechnology/Pharmaceutical industry experience strongly preferred.
  • ERP or financial system implementation experience a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic, cross-functional initiatives across the COFO organization, partnering with Finance, General Ledger Accounting, Technical Accounting, SEC Reporting, Record-to-Report Strategy & Optimization, Procurement, Strategic Sourcing and DTE to drive process excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Support enterprise transformation initiatives such as system implementations, M&A integrations and/or collaborations.
  • Partner with Finance and Technical Accounting teams to evaluate new accounting transactions and assess related budget, forecast and reporting impacts.
  • Design and support the Finance SOX compliance framework in partnership with Finance and the SOX PMO, providing guidance to Finance teams and serving as the primary escalation point for SOX-related matters.
  • Serve as Project Sponsor for the Finance Reporting & Analytics Center of Excellence, supporting reporting enhancements, automation opportunities and scalable analytics capabilities.
  • Provide Finance Risk SME support for the Third-Party Risk Management (TPRM) program, including evaluation of supplier financial health assessments, review of elevated-risk suppliers, and partnership with Procurement to identify, assess and mitigate third-party financial risks.
  • Serve as a key Finance advisor for month-end close and SOX control inquiries, with subject matter expertise in consolidation schedules, threshold requirements, and reporting system options.
  • Continuously champion effective system design, adoption and change management.
  • Support evolving Finance priorities and business needs as an adaptable, proactive partner across the organization.
