About The Position

This hybrid position requires the Financial Counselor to be located within 100 miles of any Mayo Clinic campus. The role involves assisting patients with financial clearance, obtaining and updating insurance and demographic information in Epic, and helping patients understand options to cover their financial obligations. Counselors will also assist with Medicaid, Third Party eligibility, and Charity Care applications, establish payment plans, collect self-pay balances, and address ad-hoc financial issues. Adherence to quality assurance and productivity standards is expected.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and 2+ years of relevant experience required OR Bachelor’s degree required
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively
  • Basic computer/keyboarding skills
  • Intermediate mathematic competency
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of proper phone etiquette and phone handling skills required
  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a complex and patient-centered environment
  • Comfortable with ambiguity
  • Exhibit good decision making and judgment capabilities

Nice To Haves

  • Prior Medical Insurance Experience Preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience using an Epic RC/EMR system is preferred
  • Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) Certification Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Promptly assist patients with their financial clearance prior to, during, or after their treatment period.
  • Obtain and update insurance, financial, and demographic information within the Epic environment.
  • Courteously and professionally help patients and/or their families understand and assist with options to cover their financial obligations including but not limited to: co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurance.
  • Assist patients with Medicaid, Third Party eligibility and Charity Care applications and processing.
  • Establish payment plans and collect true self-pay and self-pay residual balances as necessary.
  • Assist patients with ad-hoc financial issues as needed prior to, during and following their treatment at Mayo Clinic.
  • Adhere to quality assurance guidelines and established productivity standards to support the work unit’s performance expectations.
