About The Position

The Financial Counselor will be responsible for communicating with patients and insurance companies regarding financial issues, payment options, medical coverage, and assistance programs. This role requires understanding and compliance with HIPAA laws and regulations, documenting payment information, and educating patients on payment options and financial assistance. The Financial Counselor will also negotiate payment arrangements, process forms, review patient bills in Athena, and update patient insurance information. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork are essential for this position to ensure a positive patient experience and efficient revenue collection.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent.
1+ years medical collections experience.
1+ years customer service experience.
1+ years medical office or hospital setting experience.

Responsibilities

Communicate with patients and insurance companies on the phone in a professional manner.
Answer calls regarding financial issues, payment options, medical coverage, and assistance programs.
Understand and comply with HIPAA laws and regulations.
Document and report all payment information.
Provide education and training to patients about their payment options and financial assistance opportunities.
Negotiate patient payment arrangements.
Review and process all patient and insurance company forms.
Review patient bills in Athena and explain basic information for collections.
Update patient insurance in Athena for rebilling of claims and send email to PRD team with detailed instructions.
Be a critical thinker and ask necessary questions to bring resolution to patient issues.
Understand CareCredit and explain its benefits to patients as a payment option.
Complete call notes on all calls taken and open cases when accounts need escalation.
Understand and adhere to payment plan protocols.
Utilize resources to determine patient coverage/benefit levels for surgical procedures.
Provide patients with estimates prior to scheduled procedure day.
Act immediately on urgent issues and work with the team to bring resolution.
Work effectively as a team unit to achieve department and company goals.
Follow company core values in all aspects.
Be accountable for work production accuracy.
Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or company directive.
Requires regular and consistent attendance.
