About The Position

R1 is a leading provider of technology-driven solutions that transform the patient experience and financial performance of hospitals, health systems and medical groups. This position is an in-person role at a hospital and may require vaccinations. It is a PRN (as needed) schedule, requiring at least two days a week during the week. As an R1 Financial Counseling Associate, you will be responsible for counseling uninsured and under-insured patients to obtain a paying funding source for their medical services. You will accurately and compassionately explain financial options and obligations during direct patient sessions. The role demands excellent customer service, commitment to assisting patients, and attention to detail. You will need to multi-task, navigate multiple systems, and communicate with compassion and authenticity to build trust with patients during sensitive discussions. Additionally, you must gain and display a thorough understanding of Medicaid and other funding programs to provide clear and concise information and assist with applications effectively and efficiently. You will have the opportunity to help patients navigate difficult times by reducing financial burdens related to their medical care, and you will be in the presence of illness and injuries. This is a fast-paced work environment. R1 provides training and leadership support for professional growth and development, including career and leadership development courses and programs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Compassionate communication
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to use and navigate multiple systems
  • Ability to communicate with compassion and authenticity to build trust with patients when discussing sensitive situations
  • Ability to gain and display a thorough understanding of Medicaid and other funding programs
  • Ability to remain mobile throughout the day in order to perform essential job duties
  • Frequent movement between work areas
  • Could be required to get some vaccinations (including but not limited to an annual flu shot)
  • Pass a drug test prior to hire
  • Pass a background check prior to hire

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a financial counselor
  • Background in medical terminology
  • Understanding State and Federal assistance programs
  • Relevant healthcare experience

Responsibilities

  • Counsel uninsured and under-insured patients to attempt to obtain a paying funding source for their medical service(s)
  • Accurately and compassionately explain financial options and obligations during financial counseling sessions held directly with patients
  • Communicate complex coverage enrollment information with patients
  • Assist with patient applications effectively and efficiently
