About The Position

The Finance Coordinator reports to the Finance Manager and provides a variety of professional and accounting services. This role analyzes, supports, and implements improvements to meet periodic reporting and other requirements of the VPFO Finance. The Finance Coordinator also provides back-up and support for the maintenance of accounting functions in accordance with UBC's policies and procedures. With direction from the Finance Manager or designate, the role is responsible for accurate and timely reporting and financial analysis. This position works closely with other unit finance support staff to ensure UBC policies and procedures are adhered to and operational results are accurately reflected in the financial systems.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Completion of at least 7 of the 14 CPA academic prerequisites.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • University degree in business administration, economics, commerce, accounting preferred.
  • Experience with reconciliations and analysis of financial data.
  • Computer experience required (Excel, Word).
  • Familiarity with computerized financial systems and applications.
  • Familiarity with UBC financial and accounting systems is an asset.
  • Basic knowledge and skills in accounting, finance, management and customer relations.
  • Excellent communication skills required including written, oral, and presentation.
  • Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting and maintaining accounting functions to meet month-end, quarter-end, year-end reporting and other requirements, including financial and regulatory reporting to both internal and external users.
  • Preparation and finalization of year-end working papers for external auditors relating to financial accounts.
  • Participating in business process analysis, documenting process flows, and facilitating workshops to elicit improvement.
  • Designing and implementing new or modified financial management or workflow systems as needed.
  • Developing and implementing appropriate internal control and budgetary systems.
  • Interpreting and monitoring financial policies and procedures established by UBC.
  • Providing advice, direction, and guidance concerning budget, accounting, and financial matters, accounting policy interpretation, and sound business practices.
  • Advising on financial implications of various planning options for units and bringing non-conforming issues to the attention of the Finance Manager.
  • Collecting, analyzing, interpreting, summarizing, and maintaining complex data sets for financial and analytical reporting using advanced reporting tools.
  • Generating periodic reports by entering or updating transactional and financial information.
  • Providing backup to support the existence of capital assets.
  • Preparing comprehensive financial reports for review and contributing to the development of monitoring standards for various accounts.
  • Overseeing the account reconciliations process and ensuring accuracy and timeliness of completion.
  • Participating on high priority projects as identified by the Finance Manager or designate.
  • Performing analysis pertaining to accounts.
  • Overseeing all expenditures, including determining eligible expenses, transferring funds, producing variance reports, and advising on and resolving impending problems/inconsistencies.
  • Participating in the design and implementation of new or modified financial management systems to meet operational requirements and streamline financial and administrative practices.
