About The Position

The Financial Aid Counselor provides excellent customer service and guidance to financial aid applicants and their families throughout the financial aid application process, determining eligibility within the parameters of institutional, state, and federal requirements. This role involves exercising independent judgment in managing operational details of the financial aid process, providing advising, reviewing applications, and ensuring accuracy and compliance. The counselor will have the authority to recalculate financial aid awards and must maintain knowledge of relevant policies. Conflict resolution skills are essential for addressing student and parent concerns, and maintaining student confidentiality is paramount. Occasional travel to off-campus meetings and participation in committees for appeals may be required. This position may require working minimum evenings and weekends. Other duties may be assigned by leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and at least one to two years of experience in Student Services or Customer Service, or the equivalent combination of education and work experience combined.
  • Customer Service Experience
  • Familiar with financial documents
  • High competency of computer skills.
  • Proficiency in basic technology (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel; Google Suites).
  • Ability to interpret regulations and apply appropriately.
  • Must speak Spanish

Responsibilities

  • Provide advising throughout the financial aid process to prospective, new, and current students and their families.
  • Review incoming financial aid applications and supporting documentation to determine the accuracy of financial and household information.
  • Complete assigned duties with a high degree of accuracy to ensure compliance.
  • Recalculate and make changes to financial aid awards when a student's eligibility changes.
  • Maintain knowledge of federal, state, and institutional policies related to awarding and disbursement of aid.
  • Utilize conflict resolution skills to pacify disgruntled students and parents.
  • Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with FERPA regulations.
  • Travel to off-campus meeting sites for institutional workshops on an occasional basis.
  • Participate in committees to review Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) appeals, Professional Judgment requests, and academic merit scholarship appeals.
  • Manage the full scholarship lifecycle, including application processing, tracking applicant records, coordinating scholarship reviews, and overseeing awarding and disbursement.
  • Other duties as assigned by the financial aid director/associate director and/or Manager of Financial Aid Counselors.
