The Financial Advocate is responsible for calculating and providing patients with personalized estimates of their financial responsibility based on their insurance coverage prior to service. This role involves clearly and accurately communicating patient liability, explaining concepts such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments, and how non-covered and out-of-network services may affect out-of-pocket costs. The Financial Advocate also requests upfront payment for self-pay amounts, establishes payment arrangements, interviews uninsured patients to assess financial needs, identifies and coordinates assistance programs, and follows up to secure a funding source for patient services. Additionally, this role initiates credit scoring to determine eligibility for various financial assistance programs, works with social workers and vendors to complete Medicaid applications, and stays informed about insurance benefits, marketplace options, and payer sources. The Financial Advocate educates offices and patients on applicable policies, coordinates with provider offices regarding scheduling and financial responsibility, and stays current on regulations for government funding, Medicare, and Medicaid. They must also understand and comply with internal charity care policies, federal regulations around 501R, and perform duties in a HIPAA-compliant manner. Collaboration with peers is essential for the operational flow concerning uninsured patients or those concerned about costs. The role serves consumers in various settings, including virtual, bedside, Emergency Department, clinic exam rooms, Urgent Care, consult spaces, or a Financial Resource Specialist office.
