The Financial Advocate calculates and provides patients with personalized estimates of their financial responsibility based on their insurance coverage prior to service. They communicate patient liability clearly and accurately, explaining concepts such as deductibles, coinsurance, and/or copayments, and how non-covered and out-of-network services affect out-of-pocket costs. This role also involves requesting upfront payment for self-pay amounts and outstanding balances, establishing payment arrangements, and interviewing uninsured patients to assess for financial needs and available assistance programs. The Financial Advocate coordinates with patients to complete paperwork for potential coverage, follows up to obtain funding sources, and initiates credit scoring to determine eligibility for programs like Medicaid and hospital-sponsored charity care. They work with state social workers and/or outside eligibility vendors to assist with Medicaid applications and stay current on regulations for government funding, Medicare, and Medicaid. Additionally, they educate offices and patients on applicable policies, coordinate with provider offices regarding scheduling and financial responsibility, and perform in a HIPAA-compliant manner. The role involves collaboration with peers for uninsured patients or those concerned about costs, serving consumers in various settings, including virtual, bedside, Emergency Department, clinic, Urgent Care, consult space, or a Financial Resource Specialist office.
