The Financial Advocate calculates and provides patients with personalized estimates of their financial responsibility based on their insurance coverage prior to service. This role communicates patient liability clearly and accurately, explaining concepts such as deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, non-covered services, and out-of-network services. The Financial Advocate also requests upfront payment for self-pay amounts and outstanding balances, establishes payment arrangements, and interviews uninsured patients to assess for financial needs and identify assistance programs. They coordinate with patients to complete paperwork and applications for potential coverage, and initiate credit scoring to determine eligibility for Medicaid, charity care, and other programs. This role works in conjunction with state social workers and/or outside eligibility vendors to assist with Medicaid applications and stays current on regulations and eligibility requirements for government funding, particularly Medicare and Medicaid. The Financial Advocate educates physician offices and patients on applicable policies, coordinates with provider offices on scheduling based on funding needs, and collaborates with peers in various settings to serve consumers.
