About The Position

Serving one million patients and their families annually, this role is part of an organization that advances medical knowledge, technologies, and practices, and develops the next generation of exceptional healthcare professionals. With over 100 locations, they provide advanced medicine and patient-centric care to the greater metro-Detroit community. The Financial Advocate develops and facilitates payment plans for medical expenses, coordinating with patients and insurers. This role involves interacting with patients, physicians, and other members of a multi-disciplinary clinical team to create an exceptional patient experience. Additionally, the position performs administrative duties related to patient registration in designated outpatient clinic settings.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) and billing systems.
  • Attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Compliance with Department Health and Safety policies and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Experience in third-party billing preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle sensitive financial discussions empathetically.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and have a high level of customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of insurance policies, billing practices, and financial aid programs including insurance EOB/COB.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  • Travel to other locations if needed.

Responsibilities

  • Manage self-pay accounts, follow up on outstanding balances, and arrange payment plans in line with policy.
  • Provide pre-treatment cost estimates and explain deductibles, coinsurance, and co-payments to patients.
  • Confirm insurance eligibility, benefits, and coverage limits before services are rendered.
  • Resolve coverage disputes and obtain necessary authorizations.
  • Support check-in and check-out processes for patients and schedule appointments/fill in when needed.
  • Perform weekly deposits for Wayne Health departments as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
