The Financial Advocate calculates and provides patients with personalized estimates of their financial responsibility based on their insurance coverage prior to service. They communicate patient liability clearly and accurately, explaining concepts such as deductibles, coinsurance, and/or copayments, and how non-covered and out-of-network services affect out-of-pocket costs. This role also involves requesting upfront payment, establishing payment arrangements, interviewing uninsured patients to assess financial needs, identifying assistance programs, and coordinating with patients to complete necessary paperwork. The Financial Advocate initiates credit scoring to determine eligibility for Medicaid, hospital-sponsored charity care, and other programs, and works with state social workers or outside vendors to assist with Medicaid applications. They must demonstrate a working knowledge of insurance benefits, stay informed of payer sources, and educate offices/patients on applicable organizational policies. Additionally, they stay current on regulations for government funding, comply with internal charity care policies, and understand federal regulations around 501R, performing all duties in a HIPAA-compliant manner. The role involves collaboration with peers for uninsured patients or those concerned about costs, serving consumers in various settings.
