The Financial Advocate is responsible for calculating and providing patients with personalized estimates of their financial responsibility prior to service, based on their insurance coverage. This role involves clearly and accurately communicating patient liability, explaining concepts like deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments, and how non-covered or out-of-network services affect out-of-pocket costs. The Financial Advocate also requests upfront payments, establishes payment arrangements, interviews uninsured patients to assess financial needs, identifies and coordinates assistance programs, and follows up to secure funding sources. Additionally, this role initiates credit scoring to determine eligibility for various programs, works with social workers and vendors for Medicaid applications, and stays informed about insurance benefits, Marketplace options, and other payer sources. The position educates physician offices and patients on applicable policies, coordinates with provider offices regarding scheduling and financial responsibility, and stays current on regulations for government funding, Medicare, and Medicaid. Compliance with internal charity care policies, federal regulations (501R), and HIPAA is essential. The role involves collaboration with peers for uninsured patients or those concerned about costs, and serving consumers in various settings, including virtual, bedside, Emergency Department, clinic, Urgent Care, consult space, or a Financial Resource Specialist office.
