About The Position

The Financial Accountant is part of the Financial Accounting team and helps support the financial records of First Command. This role supports the monthly close process by recording, classifying, summarizing, analyzing and reporting on transactions resulting from business operations. The Financial Accountant reports to the Associate Director – Assistant Controller and should demonstrate accountancy principles knowledge, proactivity, multitasking, organizational skills, analytical thinking, and problem-solving orientation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting or Finance.
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (accounting preferred) and 2-4 years of experience OR requires a master’s degree in business, accounting or finance and 1-2 years of experience.
  • Requires the highest level of integrity and ethics.
  • Familiar with standard accounting (GAAP) concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Must display sound judgment in handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Independent with high initiative.
  • Ability to recognize and suggest quality ideas for process improvements.
  • Possess strong problem solving and analysis skills and a high degree of professionalism.
  • Requires strong business acumen and maturity.
  • Must be detailed and deadline oriented but also be able to think strategically at the functional level.
  • Requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to communicate complex issues, procedures, and rules to various levels of management.
  • Requires the ability to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage multiple concurrent activities.
  • Must be able to take projects and manage to completion.
  • Ability to organize, meet strict deadlines and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced business environment.

  • CPA preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Support month-end close activities, including preparing standard and ad-hoc journal entries, reconciling balance sheet accounts, and performing analytical procedures.
  • Investigate unusual transactions or unexpected variances in monthly flux reports.
  • Perform research and provide financial analysis to management and other users of financial information.
  • Perform a subsidiary-level monthly financial statement review.
  • Prepare quarterly financial reporting as needed.
  • Own the implementation and maintenance of effective processes and procedures for completing and improving work.
  • Recommend process improvement opportunities to current accounting systems and processes.
  • Assist with updates of policies and procedure documentation.
  • Work directly with external and internal auditors, preparing audit work papers and schedules as required.
  • Work cross-functionally with Advisor Compensation, Financial Planning & Analytics, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Treasury groups.
  • Work on ad hoc reporting, analysis and special projects as assigned.
