Finance & Operations

AfterQuerySan Francisco, CA

About The Position

AfterQuery builds the training data and evaluation infrastructure that frontier AI labs use to make their models better. They are a small, early team (post Series A) where individual contributors have a direct impact on how the next generation of models learn and improve. The Finance & Operations Associate will create visibility into the business and build systems that scale with the company. This role involves owning the financial and operational infrastructure of a fast-growing, early-stage company, managing the budget and cash flow, coordinating with external partners, building internal processes from scratch, and ensuring nothing falls through the cracks. The associate will work directly with the founding team and touch every part of the business, including finance, HR ops, legal coordination, vendor management, and more. This is a high-trust, high-impact role for someone who thrives on creating structure and process out of ambiguity.

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of experience in finance, operations, or a hybrid role, ideally at a startup or high-growth tech company.
  • Strong financial modeling and spreadsheet skills—comfortable building and maintaining budgets, forecasts, and cash flow models.
  • Experience with core operational workflows: vendor management, procurement, billing/invoicing, and contract administration.
  • Familiarity with accounting fundamentals (accrual vs. cash, revenue recognition basics)—someone who can partner effectively with external accountants or a fractional CFO.
  • Highly organized and process-oriented, with a knack for building systems where none exist yet.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and context-switching.
  • A bias toward action and building over waiting for perfect information.
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain the company’s financial model, budget, and cash flow forecasts; support financing preparation with investor-ready reporting.
  • Manage accounts payable/receivable, invoicing, and vendor payments.
  • Coordinate with external accountants and legal counsel on bookkeeping, tax filings, and compliance.
  • Build and improve internal operational processes—everything from onboarding new hires to managing software subscriptions and procurement.
  • Support contract administration for customer and partner agreements (frontier AI labs), working alongside the sales and BD team.
  • Track and report on key business metrics and KPIs to the founding team.
  • Handle day-to-day team operations: benefits administration coordination, expense management, insurance, and office logistics.
  • Serve as the operational backbone of a fast-moving team—identifying gaps, building lightweight systems, and keeping things running smoothly.
