Finance Manager

Shulman & Partners LLPToronto, ON
CA$100,000 - CA$135,000Hybrid

About The Position

Shulman & Partners LLP is seeking a sharp, agile, and hands-on Finance Manager to manage its day-to-day finance operations. This role involves owning financial details, providing solutions, solving problems, and ensuring reliable financial information for quick decision-making. The ideal candidate will explain their reasoning in plain language, exercise good judgment, and make thoughtful recommendations. The firm is looking for someone with a strong finance foundation (5+ years), who enjoys building systems, automating manual work, and tackling complex problems. This is an opportunity to build a scalable and efficient finance function. The role requires someone comfortable with ambiguity, who can build processes where none exist, and who is naturally curious and understands the full context to test assumptions. The candidate should take feedback well, ask good questions, and focus on outcomes. This role is not suitable for individuals seeking predictable tasks, those who prefer to be told exactly what to do, or those only interested in managing without being hands-on. It's also not for those who prefer following a manual, dislike being in the weeds, or struggle with shifting priorities and pressure.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in finance.
  • Experience in finance or accounting, ideally in a professional services environment.
  • Comfort with data, systems, and building processes from scratch.
  • Ability to take on more scope and initiative.
  • Potentially first experience managing people.
  • Ability to build systems and automate manual work.
  • Ability to take on a new problem and move quickly toward a plan of action.
  • Comfortable in ambiguity, builds process where none exists.
  • Naturally curious, understanding the full context to test assumptions rather than settling for the quickest solution.
  • Takes feedback well, asks good questions, and cares about getting it right.
  • Humble enough to keep learning, confident enough to make thoughtful decisions, and practical enough to focus on outcomes rather than appearances.
  • Holds self and others to a high bar; does not make excuses.
  • Takes ownership without being asked. Proposes fixes for broken processes and highlights opportunities.
  • Stays curious past the first answer. Understands why something is not working and fixes it if possible. Does not say 'this is not my job'.
  • Uses good judgment and acts on it, checking in when stakes call for it, but keeps team informed.
  • Self-starter comfortable being in the details and rolling up sleeves to get things done. Does not let obstacles stop them.
  • Excellent analytical skills. Uses data to identify problems, discover opportunities, and back up ideas.
  • Legal trust accounting experience or a CPA designation is an asset, but neither replaces judgment, ownership, curiosity, or the ability to learn.
