About The Position

The Finance Clerk (Canada Summer Job) will play a key supporting role in the daily financial operations of the organization, while receiving comprehensive, hands-on training designed to build long-term employability skills for a career in finance, accounting, or data administration. This role gives a young person the opportunity to learn how financial systems operate within a mission-driven non-profit that serves the community. The successful candidate will: Gain practical experience in financial reporting, data entry, transaction processing, and documentation specific to the non-profit sector. Develop skills using financial software, spreadsheets, and analytical tools while strengthening accuracy, attention to detail, and professional communication. Work alongside experienced finance professionals who will provide mentorship, supervision, and structured learning opportunities. Grow confidence in professional work habits, problem-solving, and collaboration within a supportive learning environment. Build an understanding of how strong financial stewardship directly contributes to sustaining programs and services that benefit vulnerable community members.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in or completed a college program in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field.
  • Previous experience (e.g., internships, volunteer work, or coursework) in finance, accounting, or financial analysis, with a basic understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial software.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Interest in working within a mission-driven, non-profit environment.
  • Be between 18 and 30 years of age
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Not a member of the Immediate Family of the Employer or a member of the Immediate Family of an officer or director of the Employer
  • International students are not eligible participants

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing financial reports, budgets, and financial statements while ensuring accuracy and compliance with established procedures.
  • Support daily financial operations including disbursements, revenue tracking, reconciliations, and financial analysis.
  • Help process expense claims, vendor payments, and staff reimbursements while verifying supporting documentation.
  • Compile, review, and analyze monthly financial reports including revenue, expenditures, and budget variances.
  • Maintain organized financial records, digital files, and supporting documentation to ensure audit readiness.
  • Provide operational coverage during staff absences by assisting with routine finance functions under supervision.
  • Assist with preparations for audits, tax filings, compliance checks, and financial forecasting.
  • Participate in special finance-related projects, such as system improvements, data clean-up, or workflow optimization.
  • Support the finance team with administrative tasks including data entry, document preparation, and correspondence.
  • Perform additional finance or administrative duties as assigned to enhance learning and support department needs.
