About The Position

GWT’s Field Ultrasonic / NDT Technician is responsible for performing advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections on wind turbine blades and composite structures using ultrasonic testing (UT) and supporting NDT methods. This role provides critical structural integrity data that supports blade life extension, root cause investigations, repair scope development, and return-to-service decisions. This position requires domestic and international travel, the ability to work at height and in confined blade spaces, and a high level of technical and safety discipline. Technicians work closely with field repair crews, engineering teams, and customer representatives to ensure data is collected, interpreted, and documented to the highest industry standards.

Requirements

  • Level II or Level III Ultrasonic Testing (UT) certification (ASNT, NAS-410, or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated experience with phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT)
  • Demonstrated experience inspecting composite structures
  • Experience with wind turbine blades OR aerospace, marine, or high-performance composites
  • Ability to interpret A-scan, B-scan, and phased-array UT data
  • Experience working at heights
  • Experience working in confined spaces
  • Experience working in industrial or wind-energy environments
  • Ability to climb turbines and work inside blades
  • Must be able to travel 70–90% of the time
  • Must be able to work rotational schedules and weekends
  • Able to climb ladders and towers
  • Able to crawl inside blade structures
  • Able to lift and carry 50+ lbs
  • Able to work in extreme heat, cold, and wind

Nice To Haves

  • Prior wind-turbine blade inspection experience
  • Experience supporting root cause investigations
  • Familiarity with GWO
  • Familiarity with composite repair processes

Responsibilities

  • Perform A-scan, B-scan, and phased array UT inspections on composite material inspections to identify defects, discontinuities, and structural concerns in blade shells, main laminates, shear webs, root laminate, and adhesive bond lines.
  • Detect and characterize delaminations, voids, debonding, porosity, impact damage, and adhesive failures.
  • Support additional NDT methods when required.
  • Perform inspections uptower (inside blades, hubs, and nacelles) and downtower (on suspended blades or ground-based supports).
  • Work safely in confined spaces inside blades, using rope access and suspended work platforms, and in high-wind and remote site conditions.
  • Interface with rigging crews, rope access teams, and crane crews to coordinate safe access.
  • Analyze UT signals and map defect geometry, depth, and severity.
  • Correlate UT findings with visual observations, known failure modes, and manufacturing layup and ply orientation.
  • Provide real-time guidance to repair crews on defect boundaries, required scarf dimensions, and repair acceptability.
  • Produce professional inspection reports including defect maps, C-scan or A/B-scan images, damage classifications, and repair recommendations.
  • Maintain digital inspection records and upload to GWT systems.
  • Support engineering teams with root cause analysis, warranty claims, and insurance and customer documentation.
  • Work in strict compliance with OSHA, GWO safety training, confined space and fall-protection procedures.
  • Perform job hazard analyses (JHAs) before inspections.
  • Maintain Stop-Work Authority when conditions are unsafe.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
