About The Position

The Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Field Technician supports engineering, surveying, and construction projects by locating, identifying, documenting, and verifying underground utility infrastructure. This position performs field investigations using specialized utility locating equipment, GPS technology, and vacuum excavation methods to provide accurate utility data that supports design and construction activities while reducing project risk and utility conflicts.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and the ability to operate a motor vehicle is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Utility Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • 0-2 years of experience in utility locating, surveying, construction inspection, engineering field services, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Experience operating utility locating equipment, GPS data collection devices, vacuum excavation equipment, or similar field technology preferred.
  • Experience working around underground utility infrastructure, construction projects, or survey operations preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret utility maps, engineering plans, record drawings, and construction documents.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in collecting and documenting field information.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification.
  • Certified Utility Locator (CUL) or equivalent certification.
  • Certified Survey Technician (CST).
  • Traffic Control/Flagger Certification.
  • Microsoft Suite Products (e.g. Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc).
  • Experience with GPS and electronic field data collection software.
  • Familiarity with GIS and utility mapping platforms.
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar engineering software preferred.
  • Primarily field-based role must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • May be required to work onsite at a WSB office, as needed, as required by the project, client, or hiring manager.
  • Full-time position with schedule flexibility based on project demands.
  • Reliable transportation is required and the ability to travel daily within assigned territory.
  • Travel may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform subsurface utility investigations using electromagnetic locators, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and other utility locating technologies.
  • Locate, identify, mark, and document underground utility systems including electric, gas, telecommunications, fiber optic, water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer facilities.
  • Conduct utility designation and verification activities in accordance with company procedures, project requirements, and industry standards.
  • Perform vacuum excavation and potholing operations to verify utility locations, depths, sizes, and materials.
  • Collect, record, and validate field measurements and utility attributes for engineering design, utility mapping, and project documentation.
  • Utilize GPS, GIS, and electronic field data collection equipment to document and map utility information.
  • Review utility records, as-built drawings, survey data, plans, and maps to support field investigations.
  • Prepare field notes, sketches, photographs, reports, and related project documentation.
  • Coordinate with utility owners, contractors, survey crews, engineers, project managers, and clients to support project execution.
  • Maintain compliance with utility damage prevention requirements, One Call/811 regulations, OSHA standards, and company safety policies.
  • Maintain, inspect, and operate company vehicles, utility locating equipment, and safety equipment.
  • Assist with traffic control and work zone safety activities when required.
  • Support survey, engineering, and construction teams with utility-related field efforts.
  • Travel to project sites and perform field work in varying environmental and weather conditions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Positions self to access tools and materials in various locations.
  • Traverses job sites having uneven terrain, slopes, confined spaces, or reinforced trenches.
  • Moves materials weighing up to 75 pounds periodically.
  • Conducts visual assessments of task quality and job site safety.
  • Ascends/descends into job site areas to complete inspections and data collection.
  • Operates tools requiring fine motor skills.
  • May remain in stationary position for extended periods.
