About The Position

Zayo is seeking a Field Technician II to be primarily responsible for performing duties associated with hands-on functions within the telecommunications industry. This role requires moderate proficiency in the troubleshooting and maintenance of various types of equipment. The Field Technician II will have a strong technical, mechanical, and electrical background and be familiar and proficient around major manufacturers of transport equipment, high voltage electrical systems, DC power plants, and critical infrastructure. They will also have knowledge of ISP/OSP and associated test systems, including optical, electrical, and power testing equipment. The Field Technician II will proficiently install, test, or turn up a variety of telecommunications equipment, including SONET, TDM, DWDM, IP, or Ethernet-based equipment, with limited supervision. They will also troubleshoot and maintain various types of equipment. The assigned shift may vary based on business needs and typically includes an "On-Call" shift rotation. This position is field-based in Seattle, WA, and the ideal candidate will reside within an hour's drive of Seattle.

Requirements

  • Field-based role requiring travel to job sites

  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and meet physical job requirements
  • May require evening, weekend, and on-call support
  • The assigned shift may vary based on needs of the business and typically includes an "On-Call" shift rotation.
  • Experience with installing, testing or turning up a variety of telecommunications equipment including SONET, TDM, DWDM, IP or Ethernet based equipment required
  • Familiarity with Optical Power Meter, Digital Multi-meter, Fiber Identifier, Fiber Scope
  • Read and interpret documents such as OSHA/Company safety rules, MSDS, MOP's, CLR/DLR, process and procedure documents as well as vendor documentation
  • Follow all personal safety policies and procedures
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 2–4+ years of experience in fiber optic installation, maintenance, or related technical field
  • Working knowledge of fiber optic systems, cabling, and network infrastructure
  • Experience using basic fiber testing equipment (e.g., power meter, OTDR)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on standard installations and service tasks

Nice To Haves

  • Technical training or certification in telecommunications, electronics, or related field preferred
  • OTDR experience preferred
  • DC Power experience preferred
  • Up to 1G, 10G, 100G, 400G Circuit testing experience preferred
  • RFC2544, RFC6349 Truespeed, iPerf, Y.1564 preferred
  • Prior experience supporting or mentoring junior technicians preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of functions based on the need of their assigned geographic area.
  • Operate under some supervision.
  • Participate in conference calls or meetings related to projects and processes.
  • Perform installation and installation commissioning's, troubleshooting, and handling of optical transmission systems with guidance from leadership.
  • Perform OTDR, Ethernet, BER, and SONET acceptance testing.
  • Complete installation, decommissioning, and troubleshooting problems of network and customer services.
  • Provide preliminary site surveys for building entrance construction requirements and equipment space availability.
  • Perform preventative and demand maintenance of the network, critical infrastructure (commonly referred to as facilities), and materials management.
  • Understand, learn, and execute industry "best practice standards" for installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safekeeping of the network.
  • Perform installation, labeling, cleaning, and testing of fiber optic patch cords.
  • Sometimes assigned to outside plant network in a given market, including metro and long-haul fibers.
  • Proactively seek and identify potential network problems and report these issues before becoming service affecting events.
  • Resolve issues identified during routine preventative maintenance conducted during defined timelines.
  • Meet documented objectives and goals as business needs define.
  • Write routine reports, fill out documentation such as site surveys and audit reports.
  • Effectively communicate with customers, management, peers, and contractors, as well as other members of the organization.
  • Resolve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations using deductive reasoning skills to improve the customer experience and network performance.
  • Read and interpret documents such as OSHA/Company safety rules, MSDS, MOP's, process and procedure documents, as well as vendor documentation related to equipment owned by the company.
  • Use written communication effectively with internal and external peers on a daily basis to work towards common goals.
  • Resolve minor conflicts with industry peers, internal peers, or customers without management intervention being necessary.
  • Conduct a daily inspection of company-issued vehicle to ensure it is in a safe operating condition.
  • Inspect cabinets, buried cable, construction sites, and other facilities outdoors in various environments, weather conditions, temperatures, exposed to local flora and fauna.
  • Follow all personal safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in on-call schedule rotation 24/7/365, dispatch, and overtime.
  • Work occasional long shifts with overnight travel as necessary.
  • Assist other employees with tasks as needed.
  • Act as an informal resource for less experienced Field Technicians.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
