About The Position

The Field Survey Technologist works primarily in the field under the direction of a Project Manager and/or Land Surveyor, supporting a wide range of survey projects from land development and strata/air space work, topographic and rights-of-way surveys, surveys for infrastructure and capital works projects, construction and monitoring surveys, surveys on First Nation lands and many other diverse types of surveys. This role leads day‑to‑day survey activities at project sites, supervises Field Survey Assistants, and ensures work is completed safely and accurately in accordance with established standards. As a COR‑certified organization, Aplin Martin places a strong emphasis on health and safety, supported by clear procedures, training, and a proactive safety culture. The Field Survey Technologist collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams while utilizing modern survey technologies such as UAVs, GNSS, and laser scanning.

Requirements

  • Survey Technology Diploma with 5+ years’ survey experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in a variety of outdoor settings and weather conditions.
  • Physically fit and capable of lifting and carrying survey equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of dependability, technical ability and attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of Robotic total stations, latest conventional survey technologies and GNSS solutions.
  • Working knowledge of Trimble Survey Equipment and Trimble Business Center is an asset.
  • Occasional overnight travel, with the majority of work occurring in the region.
  • A valid AB driver’s license, with excellent driving record. A driver abstract will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Project Manager/Land Surveyor to ensure survey procedures are followed and project expectations are met.
  • Perform various types of surveys that may include legal, topographic, right of ways, construction layout, as built and engineering surveys.
  • Collect data in the field using a variety of tools including data collectors, robotic total stations and GNSS receivers.
  • Prepare clear and accurate field notes and sketches.
  • Ensure collected data is accurate and standard survey procedures have been followed.
  • Maintain survey vehicle and equipment.
  • Work with clients in a professional manner.
  • Perform survey computations in the field.
  • Assist in training and developing new team members.
  • Follow all safety guidelines provided by Aplin & Martin.
  • Complete Field Level Hazard Assessment on a daily basis.
  • Assist the Project Manager with organizing and scheduling for the following days’ field work and coordinating with the Survey Assistant.
  • Clear vegetation and debris in order for measurements to be taken.
  • Upload and download survey data on a daily basis.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
