Our Client is a well-established multidisciplinary civil engineering and land development firm providing comprehensive services across civil engineering, land surveying, land planning, transportation, and water resources. The firm serves a diverse range of public and private sector clients and is committed to delivering technically sound, efficient, and innovative solutions for complex infrastructure, development, and construction projects. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced surveying professional to take a leadership role within an established organization and oversee complex, high-impact surveying operations in the San Diego area. The Field Survey Manager will be responsible for leading and overseeing surveying operations for development, construction, infrastructure, and land development projects. The successful candidate will have extensive land surveying experience, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to manage field crews and office-based survey staff while maintaining high standards for accuracy, quality, safety, productivity, and project delivery. This position will oversee day-to-day survey department operations, coordinate project activities, support business and client development, monitor project performance, and ensure surveying deliverables meet applicable standards, regulations, and client requirements.

Requirements

• Minimum of 10 years of professional land surveying experience.
• Significant experience managing survey crews, surveying projects, and/or survey department operations.
• Strong knowledge of boundary, topographic, construction staking, control, and related land surveying procedures.
• Strong understanding of field surveying operations, jobsite safety, and surveying best practices.
• Proficiency with Civil 3D, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
• Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, schedules, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• High attention to detail with a strong commitment to accuracy and quality.
• Ability to work effectively with field crews, technical staff, project managers, clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
• Must be willing to work on-site in San Diego, California.
• Must be able to effectively manage field crews and office-based survey personnel.
• Must be able to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and competing priorities.
• Must consistently follow applicable safety procedures and surveying best practices.
• Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills are essential.
• Must maintain a high standard of accuracy, quality, professionalism, and technical integrity.

Nice To Haves

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
• Active California Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license, or ability to obtain California licensure within 180 days.
• Experience working with public agencies, contractors, developers, and private-sector clients.
• Experience with modern surveying equipment, technologies, software, and field data collection systems.
• Strong project management experience.
• Strong client relationship management and business development experience.
• Experience overseeing surveying operations for complex development, infrastructure, or construction projects.

Responsibilities

• Manage the day-to-day operations of the survey department, including field crews and office-based survey personnel.
• Oversee boundary, topographic, construction staking, control, and related land surveying activities.
• Coordinate surveying activities with project managers, engineers, contractors, developers, municipalities, and other project stakeholders.
• Review survey data, CAD drawings, coordinate geometry, calculations, and technical deliverables for accuracy and completeness.
• Ensure field documentation, survey records, reports, and project deliverables are maintained accurately.
• Manage multiple surveying projects simultaneously while meeting established schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
• Prepare and review proposals, contracts, project budgets, schedules, and financial information.
• Monitor project progress, productivity, quality, utilization, and profitability.
• Assist with project planning, resource allocation, scope management, and scheduling.
• Identify project risks, technical challenges, and potential schedule or budget concerns.
• Support effective project execution while maintaining high standards for quality and client satisfaction.
• Ensure projects are delivered efficiently, accurately, and in accordance with contractual requirements.
• Establish and maintain quality control and quality assurance procedures for surveying projects.
• Review technical work and deliverables to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with applicable standards.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local surveying regulations and industry requirements.
• Promote best practices for surveying procedures, documentation, field operations, and technical deliverables.
• Identify quality concerns and implement appropriate corrective actions.
• Supervise, mentor, and train survey crews and technical staff.
• Provide direction and technical guidance to field and office survey personnel.
• Establish clear expectations regarding productivity, accuracy, quality, safety, and project performance.
• Support employee development and help strengthen the technical capabilities of the survey team.
• Promote effective communication and collaboration between field and office personnel.
• Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with clients, contractors, municipalities, regulatory agencies, developers, and other stakeholders.
• Participate in client meetings, project discussions, presentations, and coordination activities.
• Communicate project status, technical findings, requirements, and potential issues effectively.
• Support business development activities and contribute to proposals and client relationship initiatives.
• Assist with the selection, implementation, and effective use of modern surveying equipment, technology, and software.
• Evaluate opportunities to improve surveying workflows, efficiency, accuracy, and productivity through technology.
• Promote and enforce safe work practices at field locations and project sites.
• Ensure survey crews follow applicable safety procedures and industry best practices.

Benefits

• Annual Salary: $125,000 – $165,000, based on experience and qualifications.
