About The Position

Symbotic is seeking a Field Service Technician to support the performance, reliability, and availability of our automated micro fulfillment and material handling systems in live customer environments. This hands-on, customer-facing role requires strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, operational awareness, and the ability to diagnose and resolve issues across robotic, conveyor, and automated equipment platforms. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem solver who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, takes ownership of technical challenges, and collaborates effectively with customers and internal teams to ensure safe operations and maximize system uptime. The Micro-Fulfillment Operations organization is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and optimizing Symbotic's automated fulfillment systems located within our customers' retail stores. Our team works directly in live operational environments to ensure systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably while enabling customers to meet their fulfillment goals. Field Service Engineers serve as the frontline technical experts, providing troubleshooting, maintenance, and operational support while collaborating closely with customers, operations teams, and engineering partners to drive continuous improvement and deliver an exceptional customer experience.

Requirements

  • Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent hands-on experience in Electrical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Technology, Mechatronics, Automation Technology, or a related technical field, OR Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience supporting automated systems in warehouse, distribution, manufacturing, or material handling environments.
  • Experience troubleshooting electromechanical equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair electrical circuitry, control panels, motors, sensors, and automation hardware.
  • Experience supporting live operational environments where equipment uptime directly impacts production or fulfillment operations.
  • Understanding preventive maintenance, breakdown response, and equipment recovery procedures.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions and maintain professionalism in customer-facing and high-pressure operational situations.
  • Familiarity with lockout/tagout procedures, electrical safety practices, machine guarding, working at heights, and conveyor safety standards.
  • Ability to travel regionally within Massachusetts (30–40%) and occasionally across North America to support training and technical initiatives.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of CMMS systems and maintenance documentation practices preferred.
  • OSHA, NFPA 70E, electrical safety, or vendor-specific automation certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance on automated systems including robotic bots, conveyors, lifts, motors, sensors, and material handling equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair PLC-controlled systems, electrical circuits, control panels, HMIs, and electro-mechanical components in live production environments.
  • Respond to equipment faults and operational disruptions by diagnosing and resolving failures involving conveyors, robotics, motors, drives, sensors, and other automated hardware to quickly restore system functionality and minimize operational downtime.
  • Execute inspections, adjustments, component replacements, and equipment repairs.
  • Monitor system performance, alarms, logs, and operational data to identify recurring faults and equipment reliability concerns.
  • Support daily operational activities and partner closely with customers to maximize system uptime, productivity, and overall operational performance.
  • Escalate complex technical issues to Field Service Engineers and engineering teams as needed to support timely resolution and minimize operational impact.
  • Partner with Hardware, Software, Systems Engineering, Operations, and site leadership teams to restore and stabilize system performance.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, controls diagrams, and mechanical drawings to troubleshoot complex automated systems safely and efficiently.
  • Support training programs, technical initiatives, and future site go-live activities as a developing subject matter expert.
  • Maintain maintenance records, repairs, and troubleshooting documentation within CMMS and internal reporting systems.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, LOTO, electrical safety, machine guarding, conveyor safety, and Symbotic safety standards.
