About The Position

This is the entry level position within the Operations Field/Service Technician job family. This position includes a progression to Field/Service Technician 2 after two years and the completion of necessary training and Operator Qualifications (OQs). The role involves serving the needs of a residential and commercial customer base. NiSource is a public utility that is required to provide continuous service to customers at all times. Employees may be required to work outside their normal work hours and perform tasks outside of their normal responsibilities in support of emergency operations. Requirements

  • Must have a High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a mechanical aptitude and be able to use various types of hand tools needed for repair of field facilities.
  • Must be able to perform basic math calculations, prepare legible records and understand written and oral communications.
  • Must have ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to follow through on assignments with little or no direct supervision.
  • Requires skill in reading/interpreting gauges & dials.
  • Must be able to be certified to wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • All positions are subject to applicable DOT (Department of Transportation) Anti-Drug and Alcohol Misuse Prevention Plan (AMPP) regulations.
  • All positions must be able to respond to emergency calls and work scheduled and nonscheduled overtime.
  • Successful candidates must pass pre-employment Attitude Assessment, Aptitude Testing, Physical Capability Assessment, Drug Screen, MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) screen and Background report.
  • Successful candidates must abide by area specific living requirements.
  • Must be able to pass applicable service physical capability assessments.
  • Job requires working in all weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations concerning pipeline safety and underground construction practices

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the plumbing trade with natural gas experience and current OQ (Operator Qualification) plumbing qualifications preferred
  • Experience reading/interpreting gauges and dials

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the installation, repair and replacement of distribution facilities such as main lines and services and for the operation and maintenance of construction equipment.
  • Operates all light earth-moving equipment, such as backhoe, side boom, tamper, and hydra-crane.
  • Maintenance of said equipment (including cleaning, greasing and lubricating) and transportation of equipment and/or materials.
  • Installs and removes gas meters, meter settings, and regulators; inspects and tests service and house lines for leaks.
  • Uses test instruments as required to install, service, and adjust all gas appliances.
  • Investigates gas service inquiries, such as no gas, leaks, gas odor, blowing gas, fires, explosions, and high bills.
  • Advises plumbers, contractors, and prospective customers on service and house line installations.
  • Turns gas on/off for customers.
  • Collects delinquent bills; reads meters; locates, cleans and repairs curb boxes.
  • Uses pressure gauges to test for line leaks and gas detection instruments to locate leaks.
