About The Position

This is a part-time position within the Parks Department. The role involves maintaining landscapes, turf, and right-of-ways, as well as installing, repairing, and maintaining irrigation systems. Responsibilities also include trimming trees, hedges, and shrubs, performing repairs to lighting and plumbing systems, applying fertilizers and pesticides, and undertaking welding, fabrication, and repairs. The position requires removing trash and debris from parks, preparing athletic fields, and maintaining equipment and buildings. There may be opportunities to build and develop recreational areas. The role involves driving trucks and equipment and performing other park-related duties. Additionally, the position may involve assisting in Street and Drainage Department maintenance and Animal Control duties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Texas Driver’s License
  • Previous experience which required mechanical aptitude and ability
  • Familiarity with maintenance techniques
  • Ability to operate a variety of power tools and equipment
  • Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects
  • Ability to maintain body equilibrium when bending, stooping, couching, climbing, reaching and/or stretching arms, legs or other parts of the body
  • Ability to physically maneuver over and/or upon varying terrain, surfaces or physical structures
  • Minimal levels of eye, hand and foot coordination
  • Ability to lift more than 50 pounds
  • Requires color, texture and depth perception as well as the ability to see, hear, speak, smell and taste
  • Ability to work in varying conditions, surroundings and all-weather conditions
  • Ability to work in adverse environmental and hazardous conditions to include mechanical, electrical, fume odor, dust/mist, chemicals and other solid waste substances
  • Ability to work above ground from a 6-foot ladder to a 60-foot boom lift
  • Ability to communicate with other employees in the work group
  • Knowledge of the mechanical operation of both light and heavy motorized equipment
  • Knowledge of common tools, materials and methods used in maintenance and construction work
  • Mechanical skill required in operation of equipment
  • Working knowledge of basic construction practices
  • Ability to operate equipment carefully and safely
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Regular attendance is essential
  • Must arrive at work on time, prepared to perform assigned duties and work assigned schedule
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of themselves or others
  • Unscheduled overtime and response to emergency situations may be required
  • Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test
  • Must pass thorough background checks
