About The Position

Orion Space Solutions, an Arcfield company, is seeking a hands-on Field Service Engineer to support the development, integration, deployment, operation, and maintenance of advanced electro-optical sensing systems, including the OSIRIS family of passive optical sensors. The role combines laboratory engineering work in Orion’s Louisville facility with deployments to government test ranges, maritime environments, and other field locations. The engineer is expected to understand system hardware, diagnose unexpected problems, develop practical solutions with available resources, and keep instrumentation operating in real-world conditions. When not deployed, the engineer works with Orion’s science and engineering teams to assemble, integrate, calibrate, test, maintain, repair, and develop optical sensor systems. The position is hands-on and includes supporting OSIRIS and other optical sensing programs, including extended test campaigns away from the home facility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant engineering or computation field plus 5–7 years of professional experience in software engineering development positions for high-reliability space and aerospace applications; or a master’s degree plus 3–5 years; or a PhD plus 0–2 years.
  • Experience working as a test engineer or technician testing complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy, install, configure, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and recover electro-optical sensor systems at government ranges and other field-test locations.
  • Support OSIRIS deployments and other optical sensing programs, including extended test campaigns away from the home facility.
  • Troubleshoot optical, mechanical, electrical, computer, networking, thermal-management, and data-acquisition subsystems in the field.
  • Diagnose failures using engineering fundamentals, test equipment, telemetry, software tools, and direct inspection.
  • Develop safe and technically sound field solutions when laboratory resources are unavailable.
  • Assemble and integrate optical systems incorporating lenses, filters, cameras, detectors, precision optomechanics, computers, electronics, and environmental enclosures.
  • Perform optical alignment, focus verification, calibration, boresighting, and system performance checks.
  • Operate oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, optical power meters, data-acquisition systems, and other diagnostic equipment.
  • Fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical and electrical components, cables, mounts, fixtures, and interfaces as required.
  • Support sensor installation on fixed sites, transportable platforms, and maritime or other mobile platforms.
  • Configure computers, cameras, networks, timing systems, data storage, and supporting software for sensor operation.
  • Monitor system health and data quality during testing and rapidly troubleshoot anomalous performance.
  • Maintain configuration control and document field modifications for evaluation, reproduction, or incorporation into later builds.
  • Prepare equipment for shipment and deployment; ensure safe transportation, inventory, setup, teardown, and return of sensitive optical instrumentation.
  • Develop and maintain assembly, deployment, calibration, troubleshooting, and test procedures, checklists, and field documentation.
  • Participate in pre-test planning, test execution, and post-test data reviews with Orion personnel, government customers, range personnel, and other participants.
  • Capture deployment lessons learned and translate field experience into engineering improvements for subsequent OSIRIS builds.
  • Provide laboratory engineering support, including system assembly, integration, testing, calibration, repair, refurbishment, and development of future sensor hardware.
