The Field Network Engineer supports and maintains network infrastructure for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for the DC Government in Washington, DC. The role deploys and supports Cisco DMVPN hub-and-spoke and spoke-to-spoke overlay networks over Metro Ethernet, configures and troubleshoots IPsec VPN profiles, GRE tunnels, NHRP mappings, and tunnel interfaces, and implements dynamic routing for failover and path selection. It also develops redundancy strategies, including LTE/5G backup paths, and monitors tunnel health, latency, throughput, and service levels. The engineer coordinates Metro Ethernet circuit provisioning and incident resolution with service providers; manages dual-WAN redundancy and carrier handoffs; and performs field installations and cutovers of network equipment. Responsibilities include managing VLANs, IP addressing, Layer 2/Layer 3 connectivity, network segmentation, and QoS, as well as troubleshooting end-to-end connectivity and maintaining network documentation. The position ensures reliable, low-latency transport connectivity for traffic signal control systems, CCTV/video surveillance platforms, and IoT field devices. It supports cabinet upgrades and migrations from legacy infrastructure to DMVPN-based transport. The engineer also applies encryption and security policies, manages VPN certificates and key rotation, implements IoT security practices, and supports audits, vulnerability assessments, and remediation. The work combines field assignments at street-level cabinets and utility corridors, data center operations, and remote support. Travel to field locations across the District is required. The role requires a valid driver’s license, the ability to lift and rack equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, participation in scheduled maintenance windows, and on-call availability for after-hours emergency response.
