About The Position

The Field Maintenance Worker II is responsible for semi-skilled work associated with the operation and maintenance of the force mains, diversion chambers, flood control chambers, stormwater overflow regulators, air relief chambers, and interceptor and collection system. Duties typically are performed on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; however, employees may work nights, weekends, emergencies and holidays as required.

Requirements

  • Relevant experience in the operations and maintenance of wastewater collection systems.
  • Basic understanding of the force mains, diversion chambers, flood control chambers, storm water overflow regulators, inlets and interceptor and collection systems with the ability to perform maintenance and repairs as well as preventive maintenance on related equipment under general supervision.
  • Good mechanical aptitude and ability to use a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing and carpentry as they relate to wastewater collection and conveyance systems.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, specifications, blueprints, and layouts related to sewer collection systems.
  • General understanding of automatic flow regulating, sampling, and flow recording equipment.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare operating and maintenance reports using computer software, including Microsoft Access and Excel.
  • Ability to react quickly and appropriately to alarms, hazardous situations, sewer gases, and other environmental hazards.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with Endorsement N

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Wastewater Collection Systems Certificate, Class E, or the ability to attain one preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain pumps, blowers, generators, sewer flushing, rodding, vacuum, jackhammer and related equipment.
  • Operate backhoes, sewer flushing, rodding, and vacuuming equipment under general supervision.
  • Enter and perform work within the sewerage system and assist with sewer system maintenance activities, including the use of high-pressure water lines, hammers, saws and shovels.
  • Monitor air quality and respond appropriately to alarms and hazardous conditions.
  • Act as a flagman, set up safety equipment, including barricades, gas detectors, harnesses, and rescue retrieval systems.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools to perform maintenance and repair work.
  • Work cooperatively with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public while completing assignments safely, efficiently, and timely.
