About The Position

Wharton-Smith, Inc., a general contractor operating throughout the Southeast, is seeking a Field Engineer for work in the Treasure Coast region between Palm Bay and Port St. Lucie, Florida. The Field Engineer supports the Superintendent and serves as a liaison among Superintendents, Subcontractors, and Project Engineers. The role assists with work plan development, coordination of subcontractor activities, contract administration, and field operations to support project execution, schedule, quality, and compliance requirements. The position also supports jobsite safety and production systems, including inspections, training, safety meetings, production plans, schedule maintenance, and project closeout. Work is performed at active construction sites and may involve varying weather and physical conditions. The schedule is project-based and may include nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime, with daily travel to assigned jobsites and occasional overnight travel depending on project requirements.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or another relevant field.
Zero to four years of construction-related experience.
Ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with Project Managers, Project Superintendents, and Foremen to receive direction and provide project support.
Training and/or certification as a Competent Person in applicable areas, including trenching, scaffolding, rigging, confined space, fall protection, OSHA 10-Hour, First Aid and CPR, silica, and risk management.
Knowledge of surveying fundamentals.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
Ability and willingness to work in an active construction jobsite environment and varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, noise, and dust.
Ability to safely navigate uneven surfaces, ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and similar structures.
Ability to perform physical job duties for extended periods, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying.
Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds and meet the physical requirements necessary to safely perform essential job functions.
Ability to work a flexible project-based schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
Ability to travel daily to assigned jobsites, with occasional overnight travel based on project requirements.

Nice To Haves

Six years of construction-related experience with a proven record of quality and profitable craftwork.
Current Competent Person certifications in trenching, scaffolding, rigging, confined space, fall protection, OSHA 10-Hour, First Aid and CPR, silica, and risk management.
Knowledge of surveying fundamentals.

Responsibilities

Coordinate and assist with facility start-up activities.
Attend subcontractor, progress, and team meetings.
Maintain field, equipment, delivery, concrete-tracking, and rental-tracking logs and files.
Identify the need for Requests for Information (RFIs) and manage field RFIs.
Manage approved submittals to support quality control and compliance with onsite operations.
Maintain electronic and hard-copy as-built drawings, drawing control systems, and field files.
Handle material purchasing, expediting, and management of field purchase orders; maintain a material control system for materials entering the site.
Monitor and report productivity.
Perform small pipe and PVC take-offs.
Perform layout work using survey equipment, batter boards, and string lines.
Create and maintain spare-parts lists and inventory for project turnover.
Schedule building department inspections and accompany inspectors during site walkthroughs.
Understand Project Cost Accounting (PCA) budgets and subcontractor and purchase-order scopes.
Verify correctness of work and assist with quality-control management, including pre-pour checklists and completion lists.
Create equipment maintenance and storage logs and manage small tools.
Support the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), client and RPR relations, and daily progress photography.
Complete project closeout after substantial completion.
Coordinate utility locates and One Call tickets and coordinate with the Virtual Design Construction (VDC) business unit.
Assist with daily reports.
Schedule required safety training and new-hire safety orientations; conduct daily inspections and weekly safety meetings.
Assign and review Safety Task Analyses (STAs) conducted by Foremen and conduct STA meetings on small projects.
Follow and enforce safety rules, support operations intended to maintain zero accidents, manage jobsite incident and accident standard operating procedures, and manage subcontractor onsite safety.
Set up and maintain a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) book for each project.
Create production plans, maintain weekly PPC, and maintain the six-week schedule, sending it to subcontractors on Fridays.
Lead end-of-shift meetings and after-action review meetings, assist with production board updates, and attend weekly team meetings.
