About The Position

The Field Engineer I supports construction projects under the direction of a Lead Project Engineer, Construction Manager, or Resident Engineer. This role is the entry point to the engineering side of construction management, focusing on turning field inspection data into contract administration tasks such as progress payments, change orders, submittals, RFIs, force accounts, and project controls. The Field Engineer I manages project documentation, ensures compliance with contract requirements, and maintains the records that drive the financial and administrative aspects of the project. They collaborate with inspection staff to verify quantities, review daily reports, and ensure documentation accuracy and completeness. This position is designed to build foundational skills in project management, including document control, contract comprehension, cost tracking, and clear communication with the project team, contractors, and the owner. Field Engineer I staff are expected to develop proficiency quickly and assume increasing responsibility. Representative tasks involve maintaining project files, reviewing daily inspection reports, tracking project logs, processing force account sheets and progress payments, drafting change orders, managing submittals and RFIs, reviewing contractor compliance documentation, assisting with field inspections, verifying contractor work against plans and specifications, preparing cost estimates, attending project meetings, and coordinating with various stakeholders. The role also involves communicating project status and documentation issues to senior engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or related field, OR equivalent combination of education and 3+ years of construction field experience.
  • 0–3 years of field engineering or construction experience.
  • Must obtain relevant inspection and testing certifications within the first year.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety certification required; OSHA 30-Hour within the first year.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

  • PE licensure track encouraged — EIT/FE exam completion preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain organized project files in both digital and physical formats, ensuring records are accessible, current, and complete.
  • Review daily inspection reports and Headlight diaries for accuracy, completeness, and proper pay item coding, coordinating corrections with inspection staff.
  • Track and maintain project logs, including materials certification, drill logs, hauling logs, compressive strength results, and other project-specific records.
  • Process force account sheets by verifying field measurements, completing forms, obtaining signatures, and filing them in the project record.
  • Prepare and process progress payment documentation, comparing reported quantities against QRSE logs and contract pay items.
  • Draft change orders and support the change management process under supervision.
  • Route, track, and perform basic reviews of submittals and RFIs, ensuring timely progression through the review cycle and flagging overdue items.
  • Review contractor tax rates, insurance certificates, and subcontractor compliance documentation.
  • Assist with field inspection activities as needed, including inspecting construction work, conducting sampling, and documenting observations.
  • Verify contractor work complies with contract plans and specifications and report non-conformances.
  • Prepare independent cost estimates for small scope items when directed.
  • Attend project coordination and progress meetings, documenting action items and distributing meeting notes.
  • Coordinate with contractors, designers, and project stakeholders on submittal status, RFI responses, and documentation requirements.
  • Communicate project status and documentation issues to the Field Engineer II, Construction Manager, or Lead.
