About The Position

Groundswell Contact has partnered with Forward Montana to run a direct voter contact program across two distinct Native American communities in Montana’s 1st Congressional District: the Blackfeet Reservation and the CSKT/Flathead Reservation. The program involves knocking doors and engaging at community sites to ensure residents know how, when, and where to vote, building toward a Get Out The Vote push. Due to the geographic distance, the program is run as two distinct field operations, each requiring dedicated leadership capable of managing staff, data integrity, and community relationships in rural and dispersed territory. Groundswell is seeking to hire two Field Directors: a Lead Director and a Canvass Director. This is a heavily field-based leadership role where directors will canvass extensively alongside their teams. The majority of working hours will be in the field, leading by example. The Lead Director will have top on-the-ground leadership for the entire program, overseeing operations across both reservations, managing the Canvass Director and teams, owning program-wide data integrity and reporting, and serving as the primary point of contact with Groundswell Contact leadership. This role requires independence, the ability to build trust quickly with local communities, and to run a disciplined, metrics-driven program with minimal oversight. The Canvass Director will lead day-to-day field execution at their assigned reservation site, working under the Lead Director to manage a team of canvassers, hit daily/weekly goals, and ensure quality, respectful conversations. This role is hands-on, involving regular canvassing, real-time coaching, and maintaining clean data. Field Directors are at-will, exempt, salaried employees directly hired, managed, and employed by Groundswell Contact, LLC.

Requirements

Available full-time for the duration of the program (mid-to-late September through early November 6, 2026), including evenings and weekends as needed
Ability to travel between Blackfeet and CSKT/Flathead sites as needed
Personal Transportation Required: Having a valid drivers license, and access to a registered and insured motor-vehicle in line with state requirements for the length of each shift
Must be over the age of 18 and legally eligible to work in the United States
Must not have been convicted of a felony involving identity theft, campaign fraud, or similar offenses
Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
Smart-Phone with Data Plan Required: A smart phone with an IOS 16.6 or later, or an up-to-date android. Work on this project requires the use of two ‘apps’ on your personal cell phone throughout your shift.
A working personal laptop and internet may be necessary for Lead Director to complete data entry.
Ability to walk long distances and stand for extended periods, including in rural/uneven terrain
Ability to lift and carry canvassing materials (up to 10 pounds)

Nice To Haves

At least 1 full cycle of experience leading a field canvassing or voter contact program, ideally with hourly staff management across multiple sites (for Lead Director)
At least 1 cycle of experience in field canvassing, organizing, or managing outreach teams (for Canvass Director)
Working knowledge of NGP-VAN/MiniVAN or comparable voter contact data systems.
Ability to cut turf strongly preferred.
Experience operating in rural, tribal, or geographically dispersed territory strongly preferred
Demonstrated ability to build trust and credibility with community members and local stakeholders

Responsibilities

Track team performance, contact and knock metrics, and progress toward site goals using VAN/MiniVAN and internal reporting tools
Lead daily debriefs to reinforce training, troubleshoot challenges, and improve program effectiveness
Ensure strong data integrity and accurate, timely reporting of all voter contact
Spend regular time in the field canvassing alongside staff, demonstrating best practices and coaching quality conversations
Own program-wide in-field strategy execution (with guidance from National Project Director), including turf/hotspot cutting, roving team logistics along the US-93 corridor (CSKT) and Browning/Heart Butte/East Glacier catchment (Blackfeet)
Provide top-line leadership and decision-making authority for the Montana tribal voter contact program across both reservation sites
Set staffing schedules and manage capacity targets
Manage day-to-day field operations, staff performance, and quality control across both sites; may travel between sites as needed to provide additional support, training, or oversight
Serve as primary in-field escalation point for HR issues, payroll, and expense approvals across the program
Communicate consistently with the Lead Director on program progress, staffing needs, and challenges
Recruit, interview, hire, and train canvassers for your assigned site
Build and maintain relationships with community members and local stakeholders at your site to support program credibility and access
