About The Position

BGE, Inc. is seeking a temporary Field Archaeologist for project-based work, primarily in Texas and surrounding regions. This role involves conducting archaeological surveys, assisting with excavations, collecting and documenting field data, and supporting report preparation. The position offers opportunities for mentorship and skill development within a collaborative team environment, adhering to safety protocols and working in various weather conditions. While this is a temporary role without benefits, it provides valuable experience in cultural resources fieldwork.

Requirements

  • Career focus on cultural resources fieldwork, archaeological investigations or related industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or archaeology; upperclassmen nearing graduation with relevant field school experience will also be considered.
  • Solid organizational skills and proficiency in technical data entry and report documentation.
  • Effective time-management, written communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Professional presence with the ability to make sound decisions in field and office settings.
  • Ability to work effectively in team environments and establish strong working relationships across project teams.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable using tablets and GPS technology for field data collection.
  • Ability to navigate through rugged terrain using a compass.
  • Ability to appropriately identify and document archaeological sites.
  • Willingness to travel within Texas and to other project sites in Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Kansas.
  • Ability to record field data accurately with minimal assistance from other employees and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to travel and perform daily strenuous fieldwork for extended periods (crews typically work 10-hour days during field efforts, except for travel days).
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in various weather conditions (including cold, extreme heat, humidity, light rain or snow).
  • Ability to navigate rugged terrain and perform shovel tests at set intervals up to 10 miles per day while carrying field equipment weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to conduct a minimum of 10-15 shovel tests per day, in rugged conditions.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation are required.
  • Ability to safely drive and appropriately maintain a work vehicle is required.
  • Passing a drug screening test and driver record check is mandatory upon acceptance of an offer.

Nice To Haves

  • GIS experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of archaeological field methods such as pedestrian survey, shovel testing, and trenching preferred.
  • CPR, First Aid, and Wilderness First Aid certifications are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct phase one archaeological surveys including pedestrian surveys and shovel testing to identify presence or absence of cultural resources.
  • Assist with excavation and trenching activities as needed, primarily in Texas and surrounding regions.
  • Collect and document field data using tablets, GPS devices, and maintain detailed photo logs.
  • Support preparation of reports, background research, and site documentation for archaeological projects.
  • Collaborate with project leads and team members to ensure accurate data collection and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in fieldwork under the guidance of experienced crew chiefs, with opportunities for mentorship and skill development.
  • Communicate findings and technical information clearly to project managers and team members.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and carry out fieldwork in various weather conditions, often requiring travel within Texas and to other states.
