About The Position

Mark Thomas is hiring an Apprentice to join our growing Survey team! The Apprentice reports to a licensed surveyor and works directly with a Party Chief to perform various field surveying tasks and travel throughout our regional job sites. The ideal candidate is interested in land surveying, a team player who is willing to learn, and an early riser open to opportunities for overtime.

Requirements

  • A current member of the Operating Engineers Union OE 3, or willing to become a member
  • Actively enrolled in a Survey Apprenticeship program, or meets the eligibility requirements for enrollment for the apprenticeship program
  • Must have a valid CA Driver's License; ability to operate the survey vehicle and meet Company driver eligibility requirements
  • Ability to work as a part of a team and take direction from more experienced field staff
  • Ability to work outdoors and travel as needed to project sites
  • Understanding of field safety practices in various environments

Responsibilities

  • Learns how to properly use field surveying tools and perform field activities correctly and safely
  • Assists the Party Chief various field tasks; learns to perform tasks independently as directed
  • Holds level rod or distance meter reflector at designated points to assist in determining elevation allocations
  • Marks measuring points with keel, paint, sticks, scratches, tacks, stakes, etc.
  • Measures distance between survey points, using Surveyors' tapes or electronic distance measuring equipment
  • Places stakes at designated points and drives them into ground
  • Cuts and clears brush and trees from line of survey using various tools as directed
  • Helps to obtain data pertaining to angles, elevations, control points, and contours
