About The Position

As a Vessel Operator, you’ll play an important role in keeping LADOTD’s marine operations moving safely and efficiently. You’ll operate state-owned towing vessels, work with a professional marine crew, and help ensure vessels and equipment are properly maintained and ready for service. This position is ideal for someone who is safety-minded, dependable, comfortable working independently, and able to make sound decisions when conditions change. You’ll also have opportunities to participate in specialized training and continuing education to keep your skills current. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in marine operations plus one of the following U.S. Coast Guard credentials: Able-Bodied Seaman (AB) or Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED).
  • Possession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) will be required at the time of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate state-owned towing vessels used to push, pull, or haul equipment and materials in support of LADOTD marine operations.
  • Monitor and perform routine maintenance on vessel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, pumps, sanitation systems, and other marine equipment.
  • Maintain vessel logs and required reports while safely operating marine radios, radar, navigation, and emergency equipment.
  • Serve as a lookout and support the crew in maintaining safe vessel operations, including emergency drills, refueling procedures, and disaster response activities.
