The New York Times seeks a digital designer to join the 2027 Fellowship class in its Opinion section in New York. The fellow will support editorial and creative teams in producing and promoting digital Opinion journalism, helping readers understand, navigate and engage with important conversations. The work includes assisting design leads in shaping stories and creating visuals for the site and social media, and working with art directors to create and commission illustrations for articles. The role calls for an interest in social, cultural and political news; the ability to collaborate with editors, writers and photographers; a strong design foundation and storytelling instincts; and working knowledge of motion graphics. Opinion is separate from the newsroom. This is an in-office position with attendance four days each week, with some possibility of remote work according to departmental guidance. Nights, weekends and holidays may be required as needed. The fellowship is scheduled to begin on or about June 7, 2027, and end on May 26, 2028, subject to satisfactory performance. There is no guarantee of a full-time position after the program. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States; the company will not sponsor work visas for the fellowship, but will consider applicants with valid work authorization or a valid student visa extendable through Optional Practical Training.
