About The Position

This position involves the diagnosis and treatment of livestock in the feedlot, including doctoring sick animals, managing hospital cattle and pens, ensuring the welfare of cattle, and assisting with the movement of livestock within the feedlot.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software and Database software.
  • Ability to accurately read and record large volumes of numbers.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situation.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands/fingers to handle, manipulate, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Examines and medically treats livestock according to protocols established by management and consulting veterinarian; administers treatment in a humane manner and in accordance with product labeling.
  • Legibly records tag, lot, and hospital numbers, withdrawal dates, and treatment administered to each animal; computer data entry of tag, lot, and hospital numbers, withdrawal dates, and treatments.
  • Assists in keeping accurate medicine inventory by recording quantities used and physically counting remaining supplies.
  • Ensures that hospital cattle have sufficient feed and water by calling feed on hospital pens and checking water tanks; maintains cleanliness of feed bunks.
  • Internally examines dead animals to determine cause of death.
  • Complies with all applicable safety rules and policies.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
